Video: Presidential Town Hall Debate from Belmont University (10/7/08)

Here is the entire, unedited debate video of the Presidential Town Hall style debate from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. The debate was 90 minutes and moderated by NBC News anchor, Tom Brokaw. It featured questions derived from the chosen audience and from a selection submitted on the internet.

The entire debate video from MSNBC:

Here is the entire video split in 10 parts from YouTube:

I thought it was rather tame for the most part. McCain went out a little in attacking Obama and they both point fingers a bit. Obama was on his message and McCain dropped the bombshell of his new economic plan for the government to buyout troubled mortgages. I don’t think the ball advanced much down the field in either direction truthfully.

  4. And not one time did the moderator point out treason from both McCain and Obama in straightforward terms. Wimps and cowards. A courageous moderator helps the audience see what a candidate is really about, rather than just asking questions that avoid the real issues, about things like the North American Union.

  6. McCain’s advantage in experience is very obvious in this debate. He’s been around the block for a long time and has seen a lot of similar issues before, where Obama openly admits being “green behind the ears” and that his plan may not work.

  8. Obama won the soundbite war. Pat Buchanan brought up some ancient debate where one person won the the other person had
    the most memorable sound bites

30 seconds are more important than 90 minutes. Although tens of millions of people will watch the debate, most everyone will forget the bulk of it immediately. The lasting impression of the debate for most voters will be the two or three exchanges — usually less than 15 seconds long — that are replayed, discussed, and analyzed over and over again. More often than not, whoever gets the best of these moments wins the debate.

  11. I was disappointed at some of the questions Brokaw selected. I think the dullness of the debate was primarily due to the his selection of the dull questions. As to who won or lost, I don’t think I can say overall. I can break down individual questions and say, but overall it was a mishmash of the same old questions and answers.

My two favorite questions were “Why should I trust either one of you” and “What don’t you know and how will you learn it”. You could see the first question rattled Obama a bit by his eyes lowering and he stumbled for a few seconds, recovered and then I don’t even remember his answer. It just wasn’t memorable. On the last question, McCain won that one hands down. I think Obama had some strong answers to some of the questions, but (for both of them) the answers were by and large stump answers. I knew them before they even said them. I wanted something new, and I didn’t get it. That’s on Brokaw’s shoulders.

I do agree with you susan, if you watch both of them regularly you can spot what throws them and what doesn’t before they can recover. Obama wasn’t as comfortable with the format as McCain was, and it showed. When he protested the format wanting to rebut McCain once again (against the rules) you could see the bully coming out in him, and McCain made a good move to say if he rebutts I rebutt his rebutt. That’s not the way Obama wanted it to go, and you could see that. Small things like this tell me Obama feels entitled, and that’s not a good character trait.

  13. EricF,

Good lord drop the Birth certificate thing… Here is a quote from the link that you posted earlier.

“meets all of the requirements from the State Department for proving U.S. citizenship.” Even the right-wing website WorldNetDaily reported in an August 23 article that a “WND investigation into Obama’s birth certificate utilizing forgery experts also found the document to be authentic,” as Media Matters for America has documented.”

Either you need to answer the question of why McCain has not signed himself onto this accusation or accept that this whole thing is stunt. So answer up.

Babs - “Obama feels entitled, and that’s not a good character trait.”

Lol. because he replied to what McCain said? That makes him look like a person who feels they are entitled to things. They were both breaking the rules of the debate, babs.

How many times did Tom tell them they were going over their allotted time? Does that make McCain feel entitled to more time? It tells me McCain feels entitled and that is not a good character trait. Seriously… that was weak

I feel both were comfortable in this format but neither of them liked being in the format with the other. Both broke the rules of the debate and both used their stump speeches to answer the questions.

To be honest, if you were in the corner of Obama or McCain than this debate did nothing for you. If you were an independent then I don’t think it helped make up your mind all that well.

Like I said, the only reason I feel McCain will have lost this debate is because he needs a game changer(not that he didn’t perform well). Obama keeps a slow trickle of people coming over to him so that is what McCain needed to do and he did not. He failed to paint the question mark on Obama.

I think he did paint a question mark - as you say - on Obama in several instances. Especially on the last question. But more often on his “look at our records” line that he delivered more than once. Anyone who DOES look at their record will, as you know, see a much larger resume from McCain than they will from Obama. Obama’s resume is extremely thin and no one can deny that. To those who experience matters to - that’s a question mark on Obama. It’s not a new one, though. We’ve always known that, so it wasn’t like it was news last night.

  16. Sorry, Babs, I have been a little on edge as of late. The problem I had with your comment is it is one of character.

It would be like calling me a liar because I told my son he plays the piano like Mozart.

I have gotten tired of this whole notion that the conservative side of this site can make character remarks like calling Obama a person who feels entitled when, firstly, the evidence is contrary and, secondly, McCain does the same thing.

So either admit that both have the same character flaw or present a real argument. Just saying something does not make it so. It is like people are just saying anything and waiting to see it stick.

Like Conservative Gal said, I have to be on CG, Babs, O_S, Bill, Todd, EricF watch over this crap. Now I am not suggesting that you (babs), Conservative Gal and some others don’t have valid points, in fact, I would argue that you offer much of the good points made on the conservative side.

Now getting back to your points.

    1. Painting a question mark… look at our records.

I agree that Obama does not have 20+ years of records but this is not a strong argument. It suggests that the only people that should be running are people who have 20+ years of being apart of the system. Which is why you and others like Palin and why I like Obama… they are not long held Washington insiders.

    2. Painting a question mark… last question.

I thought both candidates dropped the ball on this one. More specifically, I thought Obama could have gone the route of energy.

Something to the effect of, “I don’t know what exact alternative energies we will invent to get us off of our oil dependency, much like JFK didn’t know how we were going to the moon, but I know it is a goal we can achieve and a goal that needs to be made. In this light, we will learn about new ways and new approaches to this problem….”

    Something like that.

I think it’s okay to say that they don’t know how this or that will go and that’s just being human which most people fail to realize as well. I’d rather someone tell me they don’t know if in deed they don’t rather than say they do when they really don’t.

  18. What exactly did he say he didn’t know? If he said anything, it was lost to me in the barage of what he said he did know. If he had said something along the lines of what you said, I would have given him more points. McCain stepped up and immediately said “I don’t what’s going to happen”. Well, nobody does, do they?

JD, you know that if you applied for a position with the company you work for now, and you’re resume was 2 pages long with experience and the other guy applying had a 10 page resume full of documented experience - you wouldn’t get the job. Not unless affirmative action came into play. So experience is a valid issue whether you want it to be in this case or not.

Character is also an issue. Records count. Words count. And associations count. I saw a good rebuttal this morning to Obama’s brush off of William Ayers because his terrorist acts were commmited when Obama was 8 years old. The rebuttal was “Does that cancel out the guilt of Hitler as well? Obama wasn’t even born then.” Good point. If who we associate with is not important, why did our mothers discourage us from “running with the wrong crowd”? Because that’s what Obama’s done in a nutshell, JD. He’s run with the wrong crowd for a long time, and we have a right to ask why. McCain associations and mistakes are a separate and valid issue. But one does not cancel the other out.

Would you approve of your 12 year old son hanging out with gang members at school? Could you believe him if he were to tell you he wasn’t like them after not leaving them for months or even years? Think about it.

  19. Last question - “I don’t what’s going to happen”. Well, nobody does, do they?”

Exactly my point, McCain did the usual political thing and just restated the obvious. That is why I say they both dropped the ball but I will say he answered the question better than Obama. Still it was not a good enough answer to have a long debate back and forth over.

Resume - Companies look at resumes, this is true. But if the company is looking to grow in a new direction, they don’t hire the guy with a long resume of old, failed practices. They go for what they are looking to accomplish and in most cases it is with a new face.

Needless to say people are voting for direction not history. We are looking for a president to change our direction and so that is what everyone has been listening for.

Still, you have every right to bring up history but be specific. Again I have only heard people say that McCain has more experience(for the most part)… In what manner? how does it apply? What are the specifics? Does it reflect the direction they want to take us?

Associations - there is no doubt that I would be concerned if my child were hanging out with gangsters. However, I would not be concerned if my child lived in the same neighborhood as a gangster or was in the same English class as a gangster.

If this is a veiled comment directed at Obama for Bill Ayers then I say it is like someone calling my child a gangster because he lives in the same neighborhood as one or because he sat in the same class. I would have to look at what my son is doing. Is he spray painting buildings, stealing, staying out late… In what way has Obama reflected the views of Ayers? I have not heard Obama claim he wants to blow up the pentagon. Have you?

Eric, you know my opinion of the birth certificate saga, but you bring up a really good point here. If the DNC has stepped up to represent Obama in this court case, why not get it dismissed with facts? I didn’t think there was anything to this, but now you’re making me think twice.

JD, I didn’t ask you if your son was sitting in a classroom with gang members, I asked if he hung out with them. And you admit you would be concerned. I don’t make “veiled” statements, I come out and say it. Apparently, you don’t read my commentaries - I notice you don’t comment on them.

“Resume - Companies look at resumes, this is true. But if the company is looking to grow in a new direction, they don’t hire the guy with a long resume of old, failed practices. They go for what they are looking to accomplish and in most cases it is with a new face.”

Now this is just naive. And to insert “old, failed practices” into it is just dodging the issue. You do that well when you know you’re wrong. I’ve been hiring employees for my companies and others for close to 30 years. Don’t even try that with me.

  24. I would like to point out that McCain said that Obama has never done anything hard in whole life. Obama graduated at the top of his class at Harvard. McCain graduated at the bottom of his class at Annapolis. The only reason he graduated at all is because his father (an Admiral) pulled some strings with the Dean whom he knew personally. Graduating at the top of your class at Harvard is hard. I could list so many more. We know Bush also graduated at the bottom of his class. Look where his smarts got us. MaCain keeps pointing out that he is a reformer. I call B.S. Our founding fathers were reformers. Abraham Lincoln was a reformer. Rosa Parks and M.L.K were reformers. J.F.K and his brothers were reformers(among many more). I am insulted MaCain and Palin put themselves in the same catergories as those amazing people. Both canditates has said the American people are fearful. Thomas Jefferson said When the people fear their government there is Tyranny. When the government fears the people the is Liberty. That leads me to wonder why the second amendment is not utilized. The right to bear arms for the people to organized a militia to overthrow a government that has run out of control. Clearly Bush has been out of control. Bush had a vision when it came to Iraq. No matter what he was going to see that vision fulfilled. The president is to carry out the American peoples vision, not his own.

  28. Sigh…

It is like i have to spoon feed you people. I liked it more when I was being a sarcastic a$$.

Birth Certificate - I would fight it too. Have you noticed that your precious Berg has not been able to prove or will not say that the photo’s of Barack’s Birth Certificate on FactCheck with the raised Seal, signature, and all other parts is a fake? Infact, Berg is only claiming as evidence that the Electronic one seen in the link below is fake.

    http://www.politifact.com.....tObama.jpg

We will see. As of right now, I don’t blame them for letting it go to court. The DNC has lawyers on retainer which means this is at no additional cost and the only one paying right now is Berg. I would make him take it to court too and spend his $$$ then show the birth certificate and follow it up with a libel suit (which will never happen).

You can’t spend your days dealing with all the crazy people out there.

Gangster analogy - Your example was a wrong one. And it was a veiled statement in reference to Ayes and other “associates” (as you call them). so apparently you don’t come out and say it.

I read your comments babs and i did read and reply to your comment. BUT let me be CLEAR. Your example was a wrong one. You claim that it is the same as my son “hanging out” with gangsters.

I told you that I disagree and that it is more like my son living in the same neighborhood. How is that ignoring your comment? Wouldn’t it be more like me disagreeing with it? Possibly offering a different point? But be sure it addressed and responded to yours… It did not ignore it.

I think EricF is starting to rub off on you.

Resume - Have you been hiring Labor or CEO’s??? Tell, me which one? I guess I can’t talk because I have been hiring people for only 8 years but since you have 30 years I don’t have a point and can never have one until 30 years.

The CEO of Hewlett Packard came from a company that sold Point of Sale Solutions… completely different than what Hewlett Packard does.

Why would they hire him if he doesn’t have 20 years experience at IBM or Dell or Toshiba, or Acer, or Gateway or ….??? Because they were looking for someone who was qualified and more importantly someone who was going to take them in a new direction.

SO let me be clear again… OBAMA is qualified to be president of the United States which makes him a viable option for hiring. However, if you want to vote for someone because they have 20+ years in congress then so be it.

However, don’t drop the resume crap like 10+ years of Obama’s Illinois and US senate is not adequate. I know you love your McCain but I stand by what I said before.

The American people are voting for the candidate who is going to change the direction of the US. You say it is McCain , I say it is Obama.

Both have resume’s that qualify them to be president but you are allowed to disagree.

Like everyone else I am very concerned about the market. I want clean and clear answers to questions. I don’t want to hear the same old “dance around the question” response. Obama says “we need to do something” Ok what exactly, McCain had an idea, I might not have liked it but it WAS an idea.

I am really tired of hearing about how Obama had it tough as a kid and McCain and his capture and torture in Viet Nam, We all have heard this so many times.

We know both men are committed to making America great and strong again, but for God Sake’s answer the questions.

When I get on an air plane I want the person who is flying that plane to have experience, Lots of experience if something goes wrong. Obama may make a good President SOMEDAY, but not today. I want a President that is not concerned with crossing party lines. Cross them to get the job done. Joe Biden would have been in my opinion the better than Obama as Presidential candidate, he has years of experience. Sarah Palin while a great govenor is not ready to be President God forbid John McCain dies in office.

People want to blame the market mess on President Bush. Who controls the House and Senate? Democrates. They knew this was coming 2 years ago and did nothing until now! WHY? Again, who controls the House and the Senate? Democrates. Why did they not do something 2 years ago? The question is, What are they going to do now. I want a clear answer from these men.

Looking back in history: What was the deficet when Clinton left office? What President was sitting in every war in US History, Democrate. Look at my own State, Washington State, we are in a terrible mess, who is our sitting Govenor, Democrate. Hats off to former Govenor Gary Locke, Democrate for fixing the health care issue in our state.

I am not a Republican, I am a conservative, not the same thing at all, I believe that crossing party lines to get a job done is what should be done. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell do nothing but vote how their party wants them to vote, neither one of them have the guts or the brains to do the job. The only time you see Patty Murray is when there is something that might make her look good. 94% of the time she votes party lines, 2.2% she was absent from votes, the remainder she was undecided. Hmm guess no one was available to tell her how to vote.

Maria Cantwell has remained conspicously silent the last couple of years, only coming out when it’s time for re-election then she is all over the place. At least she is smart enough not to open her mouth and look stupid, Patty, pay attention, learn a lesson.

I won’t vote for a woman because she is a woman, I vote for the person who best represents my views. Have the guts to do the same.

  35. I think that both parties were stupid in this debate. They both lowered themselves to not only pointing fingers but blaming each other for anything and everything that has gone wrong. They both took credit for things that I know they did not volunteer for them. I also saw that specifically Barak Obama was bashing McCain. Not only McCain but Bush also. They need to stop blaming each other and fix the problems. People need to elect the candidate that will not blame others for everything but take responsibility and fix the problem that they or others created. If everyone fixed the problems that they created, then there would be no crisis, there would be no problems but for a little while. But putting that aside, I think that McCain won without any question. He showed that he understood the questions and answered like he did. Obama on the otherhand, skirted around the issues and stuck to his script because he got in trouble from his adviser for answering questions that he didn’t know the answers to.

  36. It is so funny how everyone gets caught up in the no its their fault situation. Last time I checked the president could be vetoed with a 2/3 vote. So I believe it is both parties fault that we are in this mess. For the most part American’s blame lawyers and lawsuits for how the cost of healthcare has spun out of control. So, let’s elect two lawyers and let them reform healthcare. Obama, has question marks all around him because of the people he has choosen to associate with. McCain doesn’t have to put them there people just need to open their eyes. This country doesn’t need another YES man. We need someone who will make tough choices and see them through. I want a president who says the same thing on Monday and Friday. I want a president who has a proven record to reach his hand across and accept a better idea from the other party. I live in a great country not prefect but great and I have the right to voice my opinion and work hard. My husband and I are young and have three children we have sent a young kid to college whose family didn’t have the money. Right now we are helping another young girl go to school. We donate 10 percent of our imcome to our church and are active in our community. We both came from nothing. My father went to prison for drugs twice. I have served my county and my husband went to college on a full acedemic scholarship. We now fall in the tax bracket Obama wants to tax to death. So I am completely offened by him. So, what gets me the most is when I see people that support him that don’t realize we all have the option to work harder and do better and it is a choice not a right. I am in no way saying that there should not be governmental assisted programs. What I am saying is Obama does support redistribution of wealth and explain to my children who don’t see their father all the time because he travels how that is fair to them. Where does ambition go then? How do we create the desire for people to make more if you take it away? Obama talks about campaign reform yet took private funding. 85 million from fannie. We all want change, but what kind of change is the question?

Anyone who has been watching the government for the last 8 years knows we need change, why not get change from the outside? I think that some of the best presidents we have had were the less experienced, such as JFK and Bill Clinton.

People must vote for the person who has their best interest, the best interest of this country and our place in the world. Being in Europe recently - our government looks utterly ridiculous.

We must also be realistic in knowing neither one of them can put a dent in the crap that was created in the last 8 years.

That does not make me more entitled than the next; however, it does make me very upset to hear people put down a man that fought for this country and has always put it first. The problem we are in right now is not McCain nor Bush’s fault ( I am not his fan either). It is because lending was done to people who should not have been given loans. Carter passed that bill in 1976. People have lived outside their means and now want to blame the government for their own poor choices. By the way I am a woman raised by my grandmother whom help establish the NOW chapter in the state of Florida. On Palin, I do not see eye to eye with her politically, but when you revert to calling her the most ill prepared woman in politics that is a little over the top. I respect who she is and how she got there. It really is the American dream. People say she talks funny, so does half of America, She can’t do the job, the people we thought could do the job got us in this mess. That is McCain, Biden and Obama. So, maybe it is time to really have a change in the white house. There are two sides to coin.

I think the strong point for McCain was talking to the Navy Chief Petty Officer. For Obama, it was talking about his mother’s health care problems. I did think Obama came off more poised.

And what’s all this talk about a person with the longer resume always gets the job. If so, how come my company has been cleaning out the people with “experience” lately and hiring new execs? Our VP of sales, for example, was here for 15 years. She just got fired a couple months ago, and a new guy got brought in.

My company is in the newspaper industry, which has been tanking in recent years. There’s been a bit of cleaning out the old and “experienced” to bring in new people who can bring in $ from online sales… eerily like McCain having many years of experience, but out of touch with how to manage things in the world today.

But I must have dreamed that, since only people with more years of experience get hired.

We are conducting presidental debtates, vice presidental debates, adds for our candidates, and the whole package. I am suppose to conduct a survey for some adults. Here is a question:
If the election were held today who would you most likley vote for?
    a)Obama
    b)McCain
    c)undecided

  43. It doesn’t matter who won.

Who cares. McCain didn’t do enough, that is all that matters. He had some good answers, his finish was great. The jabs he was throwing at the start were weak and looked a bit pathetic really, Obama gave the obvious retaliations we all knew he would. McCain keeps saying Obama will raise taxes which his initial plan at least wont, which makes McCain look kind of dumb really.

Obama will win on the issues, his stances and his record on the big issues are simply more publicly popular.

What was McCain thinking taxing health care???

    Its not about experience,..
When McCain challenged the people to view their records with the people who watch dog all the moves either make, we was trying to enlighten us as to each canidates ability to work across the isle,.. or even buck their own party, if it conflicted with Americas best interest.

  48. I don’t understand how McCain can get away with outright lies about Obama…. McCain is running an extremely dirty campaign. They both point fingers, but Obama doesn’t LIE about McCain. If McCain is lying about his opponent (and it is quite obvious), how much is he going to lie about to us if he becomes president? And as for Palin (as a side comment)… I don’t even know where to begin. I cannot stand her political views, her moral views, or her personality. To me, she is a disgrace of a human being ( http://www.grizzlybay.org.....foPage.htm ). It scares me that anyone could support her.

You probably believe all those things you published about Palin are true?

In politics both sides use only segments of statements or actions to get a desired effect. another tactic is to take things out of context.

The reality is, your guy is no cleaner than mine. Maybe even less so,.. If you beleive anything else your at a huge disadvantage.

She is now voting for Obama. Thank you Sir! You all may wonder why? She likes hearing about issues and what they’ll do to solve problems… Instead McCain took every opportunity he could to sling mud. In know… I know… Obama did some slinging also. McCain did a lot more attacking…

Did I hear McCain say that Obama would raise taxes but he wouldn’t? Then he followed up with explaining that his health plan would be financed with a new tax on those of us that have Health care from our employers? Sounds like increasing tax? Silly silly man. McCain is costing himself the election. I don’t have a problem with that.

Their battle has been entirely uphill trying to dig out from under Bush,..”they can do no right in the eyes of middle and left America”. And if they lose, it will be middle America that cast the vote. I’m a middle of the road sort, I’ve voted in 2 democratic presidents.

Party affiliation has nothing to with my decision in this election.

What I find interesting are statements like Obama answers the questions. Did he really? He only said he was going to do something about issues,.. or that they needed to be addressed,.. or what the “key” was. He and McCain said almost the same thing just worded differently.

As far as mud slinging,..give me a break! People will see what they want to.
Obamas opening statements were sharp attacks on McCain intended to make him another Bush. and it certainley didnt end there.

Should Obama be our next President,.. I will never be “on board” and I will never support him.

His concepts of change will enslave America and put it on its knees.

    Report Comment

  57. It’s interesting how people hear what they want to hear… Saying that ‘all he does is talk crap’ about Obama tells me you weren’t watching the same dabate I was. I wanted both of them to talk about issues not attack each other. Did Obama attack? Yes. McCain however took it to new levels. For most questions McCain just used it as another chance to say something bad about Obama rather then focusing on the issue.

My wife was truly undecided before these 3 debates… 2 Presidential and 1 Vice… She called me after the last one and told me when I got home I should watch the last one. I asked her why? She said McCain must be really scared, that’s all he did was attack. I watched it and agreed with her assesment. She watched the debates with an open mind. Not leaning one way or the other. McCain helped her make up her mind.

McCain will gain some votes by wagging a dirty campaign these but he will lose more. Ultimately, I feel, it will cost him the election.

  58. And do you think ACORN might now cost Obama the election? If you TRULY have an open mind, open it now. McCain was not attacking in the debate nearly as much as he should have. And if you listened to the last question, and the answer that both gave, you wouldn’t have chosen Obama.

    Report Comment

  59. Being open minded is easy to say,.. but its one of the hardest things to do.

I can honestly say I like some of the things Obama has said, I disagree with probably about an equal amount.

I dont agree with all of what McCain has to say.

But Obama is not the kind of person I’d want to be in power.
    for several reasons.

I’d rather see someone whos dumb as a post (popular view of Palin) than the likes of him.

Obama can not shake this nagging past, or his associations with radicals and racist. Why?,.. because thats who he is!

I support anything that would stop him from becoming president, up to and including a birth certificate.

If you think Bush economics was bad,…

Read between the lines people,..are you so set on the words “change”, and “21st century” that you are blind to what is being sold to you.

Take one,.. just one issue that Obama has openly stated.

He said you will have a choice when it comes to health care.
You can keep what you have, or you can get on the healthcare/welfare program.
If you are a struggling family that cant afford “Insurance” (remember that word) you will be puinished by having to pay money you allready dont have. What will your option be at that point? You will be forced to go on “healthfare”.

Some might say “whats the problem”?

    1. Instead of reforming the health care system thats gotten as greedy as wallstreet,.. we are going to feed the Insurance industry.

    2. Big Brother Obama is going to “force” middle and lower class families and small buisness into welfare,..

    3. No matter what words come out of his mouth consider the above. Where is the money going to come from?
Its going to come from you. He IS NOT going to cut spending nearly enough to support this plan.
What will happen when health care becomes co called “free”.

The medical proffesion will make astronomical proffits, and the Insurance companies that back this whole mess will become the next Fannie Mae. Unless of course Big Brother comes and explains to the American people the reason your taxes are rising even though he said they wouldnt, is to prevent another colapse.

People,.. we may well never agree completely on any thing,.. but economics and everything else on the face of the planet is goverened by the laws of nature.

If I keep taking water out of the pond, it will go dry if nothings put back,.. it will take longer if we put back less than what we take.

We’ve been drawing from the pond for a long time now.
And we are begining to see the results

  60. One must consider the past of both. I agree with that. I remember a time in our history where people were blacklisted and called communists. Because they joined the communist party? Nope. They were at a meeting in college with someone who was in that party or had a friend who had a friend who sat next to someone who knew another guy who might or might not have said something wrong… blah blah…

When you are eight years old and met someone… I don’t think that means that you agree with everything that person did or said. You meet him later in life and maybe are on the same board together. Still doesn’t mean you agree totally with that person.

I remember all the things brought up in the last election… A president with an alcohol problem ‘in his past’… A draft dodger ‘in his past’. Etc. Yet he was elected. Repulicans said… that was all ‘in the past’ and he learned form his mistakes and is a better person for it. Now flash forward 4-8 years. Guess when you are losing an election it’s ok to smear the other person.

If you want to take apart Obama’s plans and ask how is he going to pay for it. That is a very good question. One of many that should be asked. I whole heartedly agree that both of their plans should be fully explained. Sadly we won’t get taht from either. Both of them have baggage. No doubt. To ignore McCain’s and focus only on Obama is dangerous. Some of the points might prove to be true but I am sure most won’t. Smoke and mirrors.

Maybe one of McCain’s supporters on this forum can explain a little bit what the ‘Keating 5′ is. I would love to see a postive spin on something that was actually proven. Something that shows McCain’s character and his decision making abilities on financial matters that affected a lot of people. They both asked us to look at their records to prove what kind of people they are. What kind of leaders they’ll be. I can hear some replies already… ‘That back in the 1980’s-90’s’ ‘That is ‘in the past’ and not important to right now…’

Things like this take time to prove or disprove. All the accusation from McCain are just that accusations. Nothing proven. I’ll stick with what is proven over time. I never said Obama was a saint. I just think he is better then McCain. You can’t pick an choose what to remember and what ot ignore just because it will make your candidate look bad or incompatent.

  61. Honestly they both pointed figures at each other, and sometimes that’s ok, but to me I think they should have focused more on the questions and what we all want to know about everything going on today. I think it was somewhat pointless for them to go back and forth putting down each other. Thats something that they could have saved for another time, or just let the people look up their records to know what all they did in the past and now. I personally don’t like either of them but I’m still going to vote for the one I think would be better then the other. Well that’s really all I have to say.

I stated straight forward why I wont support Obama.

Keating 5, what spin does there have to be? McCain was getting dirty with special interest, and tried to protect others in that affair.

Does that null and void this?

20 years a member of a church that preaches a doctrine of racism. was that a casual connection?

  64. THE FUNDAMENTAL SUMMARY RESULTS OF THIS DEBATE IS
OBAMA ADMITS WE CANNOT WITHDRAW FROM THE
MIDDLE EAST AND HE ALSO CONFIRMED TO REMAIN IN AFGHANISTAN.
THE TRUTH IS WE CANNOT LEAVE IRAQ, WE HAVE TO MUCH INVESTED IN MONEY AND BLOOD.
AS FAR AS OSAMA BINLADIN HE IS WHERE HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN, IN SAUDI ARABIA WITH HIS FATHER
AND FAMILY IN A PALACE WITH HIS KIDNEY DIALYSIS MACHINE.THE U.S.
HAS INVESTED HEAVILY IN NATURAL GAS AND OIL PIPELINES IN THE UKRAINE,GEORGIA(tbilisi, city invaded)
AND AFGHANISTAN AND HAS SOLD THE RIGHTS TO OIL COMPANIES TO EXTRACT THAT NATURAL RESOURCE
.IRAN IS A STRATEGIC TARGET FOR THE U.S. TO MONOPOLIZE AN AREA TO CONNECT A CLEAR FLOW OF OIL.
WE MUST AND WILL LIBERATE IRAN NOT ONLY FOR ECONOMIC ADVANTAGE BUT ALSO TO STABALIZE
A REGION THAT IS A FUTURE THREAT TO THE U.S. THIS IS WHAT WAS SAID AND CONFIRMED.
IN ADDITION OIL COMPANIES UNDER OBAMA WILL NOT RECEIVE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO DRILL
AFTER THEY WIN/OUTBID OTHER COMPANIES FOR OIL CONTRACTS.
OBAMA STATED IF YOU MAKE $250,000.00 PER YEAR DO NOT EXPECT ADDITIONAL TAX BREAKS.
HOWEVER IF YOU MAKE LESS THAN $200,000.00 THAN EXPECT ADDITIONAL TAX BREAKS.
WHAT I DO NOT AGREE WITH IS MANDATING HEALTH INSURANCE OR
GIVING BUSINESS OWNERS TAX INCENTIVES TO HELP PAY FOR EMPLOYEE BENEFITS.
WHY? BECAUSE BUSINESS OWNERS ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS
TO INCREASE THEIR PERSONAL INCOME OR BUSINESS ASSETS WHICH MEANS
AN INSUFFICIENT HEALTH PLAN WITH HIGHER DEDUCTIBLES AND LESS HOSPITALIZATION COVERAGE.
THIS IS WHERE SENATOR HILLARY CLINTON WAS STRONG.
A UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE PLAN FOR THE UNINSURED OR WORKING POOR.A ZERO DEDUCTABLE,
100% COVERAGE PLUS HEAVY DEDUCTABLES ON PRESCRIPTION DRUGS.
IT IS A MEDICARE,CHILD HEALTH PLUS POLICY THAT WOULD ALSO COVER PARENTS OR CHILDREN
OVER 18 YEARS OF AGE 100%. A SMALL PREMIUM MONTHLY PAYMENT WOULD GO BY INCOME,
EXAMPLE IF A FAMILY OF 5 HOUSEHOLD EARNS $40,000.00 THEY WOULD
PAY APPROXIMATELY $79.00 PER MONTH FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY FOR 100% COVERAGE.
WEALTHIER INDIVIDUALS WILL STILL BE ABLE TO PURCHASE THE
INSURANCE OF THEIR CHOICE FROM THEIR COMPANY OR OTHER CORPORATE INSURANCE COMPANIES
AND CHOOSE THE LEVEL OF HEALTH CARE AND COVERAGE.
OBAMA FINALLY STATED AT LEAST WHAT “CHANGE” FINALLY MEANT WITH HIS PRESIDENCY.
MCCAIN IS WHAT NEEDS TO BE RETIRED FROM WASHINGTON,
FAT BUREAUCRATS WITH DEEP POCKETS TO ENHANCE THE INDIVIDUAL SENATORS WEALTH
    WHILE PASSING THE TAX INCENTIVES
ON THE WORKING CLASS THROUGH HIGHER TAXES.
WE WILL SEE NO DIFFERENCE WITH THE MCCAIN PRESIDENCY JUST TOUGHER ECONOMIC TIMES.
I DO HOWEVER FELL MCCAIN WOULD PROVE TO BE A MORE NO NONSENSE “COMMANDER IN CHIEF”
AND HAS A MORE CLEAR REALISTIC APPROACH TO THE SECURITY OF
AMERICA DOMESTICALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY.I AM AMAZED HOW THE SLOGAN “CHANGE”
CAN SWAY DEMOCRATS LIKE A BOGUS “50% OFF SALE”! FELLOW AMERICANS
WE ARE NOT LEAVING IRAQ BECAUSE IRAN WILL INVADE WITH THE
HELP OF ALQUIDA AND BUTCHER THOUSANDS OF IRAQI’S AND GAIN
    CONTROL OVER IRAQS OIL PRODUCTION.
FOR THIRTY YEARS WE GIVE $200-300 MILLION DOLLARS TO
ISREAL AND IRONICALLY WE GAVE YASSAR ARAFAT AND HIS PLO $80 MILLION PER YEAR.
THIS IS OUR MONEY THAT WE PAY IN TAXES THAT IS GIVING AWAY EACH YEAR.
SO I SUGGEST WE MAKE IRAQ A U.S. TERRITORY AND FINANCE OUR EFFORTS WITH THEIR OIL !
IT WILL LOWER OUR COSTS AND WE CAN HAVE A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT CHAIN IN EVERY CITY
WITHIN 5 YEARS AND HUNT DOWN OUR ENEMIES WITH PRECISION. NOW WHICHEVER
CANDIDATE CHANGES THEIR TUNE AND AGREES WITH ME THAT IS WHO WILL GET MY VOTE!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME IN READING MY OPINION.
    RESPECTFULLY,
    MIKE BARBERA
