Day 4 at the DNC: Obama’s acceptance speech

It’s day 4 of the Democratic National Convention and everything has led up to this final night when Barack Obama will take the stage at Invesco Field in Denver for his formal acceptance speech.

A look at the preparations in this video from the Associated Press:

Report from Breitbart:

DENVER (AP) - Barack Obama aims to weave the personal with the political Thursday as he explains to 75,000 supporters in a football stadium—and millions more at home—how as president he would make a difference in their lives.

Obama stood ready to accept the Democratic presidential nomination, the first black person to claim such a prize, on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech.

Rival John McCain, meanwhile, told a Pittsburgh radio station he hasn’t decided on a running mate just yet.

McCain told KDKA NewsRadio he wouldn’t even talk about which way he was leaning. He called former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, one of those believed to have been under consideration, a great American and a dear friend whom he has relied upon for years.

Democrats officially made Obama their presidential nominee and Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., their vice presidential nominee on Wednesday.

Obama’s unique personal story was sure to be included in his acceptance address Thursday night at Invesco Field at Mile High. Still, he also planned to talk about problems facing Americans today, from health care and education to international threats, campaign manager David Plouffe said.

“I think what Sen. Obama wants to do is make sure everyone watching at home is going to have a clear sense of where he wants to take the country, that we’re on the wrong path and Barack Obama is going to put us back on the right track both here at home and overseas,” Plouffe told ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

McCain, Obama’s Republican rival, offered mild criticism ahead of Obama’s speech, saying Thursday that he admires and respects Obama but “I don’t think he’s right for America.”

Here’s another preview video from ABC News:

We’ll have full coverage later this evening with all the important video and Obama’s entire speech.

Finally, here is video of Barack Obama’s acceptance speech of the Democratic nomination for President:

A report on Obama’s speech from Fox News:

Barack Obama, standing against the backdrop of history, accepted the Democratic nomination for president Thursday by calling on voters to invigorate the “American promise,” and pointed to his own remarkable ascent as proof that promise is still alive.

The Illinois senator, who became the first black presidential nominee of a major party Wednesday, addressed more than 85,000 cheering supporters at Invesco Field in Denver, on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

He pointedly accused rival John McCain of representing a stagnant and tired political philosophy that would mirror the Bush administration’s. But in an at-times policy oriented address, he also acknowledged the historic heft of the moment.

“With profound gratitude and great humility, I accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States,” he said at the top of the speech.

The high-stakes address came just four years after he delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic convention that launched him on his insurgent campaign for the White House.

“Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story — of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas who weren’t well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America, their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to,” he said.

“It is that promise that’s always set this country apart — that through hard work and sacrifice, each of us can pursue our individual dreams but still come together as one American family, to ensure that the next generation can pursue their dreams as well. That’s why I stand here tonight,” he said.

Obama, who has been cast as aloof and elitist by McCain, used his address to cast his rival as the candidate who is out of touch with the concerns of ordinary Americans.

Saying “now is not the time for small plans,” he declared voters are converging on a “defining” moment, when the “American promise has been threatened once more.”

“This moment, this election, is our chance to keep, in the 21st century, the American promise alive. Because next week, in Minnesota, the same party that brought you two terms of George Bush and Dick Cheney will ask this country for a third,” he said.

“Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush has been right more than 90 percent of the time? I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to take a 10 percent chance on change,” he said.

“Now, I don’t believe that Senator McCain doesn’t care what’s going on in the lives of Americans. I just think he doesn’t know. … It’s because John McCain doesn’t get it,” he said. “For over two decades, he’s subscribed to that old, discredited Republican philosophy — give more and more to those with the most and hope that prosperity trickles down to everyone else.”

Often accused of being too vague and lofty in his rhetoric, Obama spelled out specifics in his speech for how he would improve the lives of American working-class families.

Update

John McCain released an ad congratulating Obama’s achievement, it aired nationally several times before and after his speech:

I guess that’s one way to try and steal the attention..

  1. I hope Obama delivers a great speech, because I’ve just watched Al Gore and almost fell asleep.

  2. Hussein will deliver a sub standard gaffe-filled speech as usual.

Lack lustre of substance and just plain old feel good messages of hope, that has lured the mindless dummycraps into worshiping him.

What a pathetic show it has been all week, and hussein’s performance will take the cake in terms of daftness.

Looking forward to a few laughs watching him make a fool of himself.

Liberals are fun to watch when they’re not in power.

  3. I’m going to take a wild stab in the dark here and say that your not voting for the Democrats this time? ;o) I’d suggest you stay in Canada then…LOL

  4. If anyone clames to be a hardcore Republican or Democrat then you are fool. Both side have good leaders and those of you who are hardcore party followers are not concerned with the best result.
Dummycraps and Hussein are two good examples of an idiot who has no idea what is going on.

  5. Jack you have me laughing at how you phrased democrats as “dummycraps”, too funny!!! What was up with the battlefield music at the end? I hope they had counselors on hand for all that hope and change, man it looked like there was too much hope and change for some.

In the end it came down to having to choose between watching Berry Obama or Sex and the City, my girls win out every time.

  6. Democrat Congress has deveoped soo few bills for President to sign or reject. Reason seems obvious they want Obama to get credit. Drilling oil to lower oil prices has been put on hold. Democrats say it will take 7 years for off shore drilling oil to reach the pumps.. Yet in Alaska and Louisanna they have the intrastruction to make it happen very quicky. If Alaska oil field are not opened soon by Congress, the great pipe line will not flow. If fixing problems with that pipe line is not fixed because of legislative restrictions, you will finnaly see super high oil prices. Pipe line can not flow if oil suppy drops too low.

  7. To nzpudding - A kiwi telling an American to stay in Canada. Now THAT’S LOL material! Have fun worshipping Hussein.

To U.S.A. - Hussein is his NAME! What do you want me to call him? Grapefruit? Well actually he thinks like one, so that’s not entirely inaccurate.

To Conservative Gal - Hussein made a total of 7 and a half minutes of speech blunders and gaffes in his address in Jordan. Not even Forrest Gump or the Rainman blew it these many times. Dummycraps are too deluded in his feel good hypnotic curse of hope and change, to even realize that they’ve nominated a complete moron. If only I could adopt a liberal as a pet and put them in my kennel, and pat them once in a while for having a thought! But that’s too much to ask for non-thinkers!

  8. Dummycraps?

    Hussein?

What is this, a 4th grade name-calling competition? If so, ok Jack… you win.

What do you call him? Maybe his actual name, like, oh I don’t know, Barack or Obama, or maybe Barack Obama. Just a couple of ideas.

But this low blow Islamophobe-name garbage is just that. Maybe you could call him “darkie” instead?

I agree with the Kiwi, Jack. Stay in Canada, and enjoy the “socialist” government you must hate so very much.

  9. Jack Admire your abilities. It is not my style, but I like it. I can not remember calling somebody by his given middle name was a insult until Obama

  10. Bill - you are correct, there are so many double standards and unnecessary immunities granted when it comes to this marxist moron, it makes my skin crawl.

Conservative talk radio rips him to shreds and I applaud the hosts! It’s the only communication medium left that can take the bull by the horns and throw it out the stadium. Liberal media are in the bag for Hussein. They spend all day sympathizing with that empty suit. Too bad they have all the TV stations. I say stick to Radio - it’s where all the accuracy is.

    Cheers!

  11. Could we all try to be smarter in our comments and actually defend our ideas?

This blog is becoming less objective and seems to be a site for all the ridiculous extremists from both parties who have no idea why they are voting for either candidate?

Could we have a constructive debate with real facts that can actually help others vote in november?

    Thanks!

No matter what your political colour is, its a fact that the republicans f*cked up the last 8 years.
    - They have started but not finished wars which has cost many innocent lives and money
    - They have made the deficit far more bigger then it was in 2000. Bill Clinton left with a surplus, how about that for a liberal?

I could post many more arguments but you probably will talk your way around anything, beceause you wont listen to any opinion or fact that is not in line with your smallminded view.

Your posts are so full of nonsense that i dont know which rediculous statement i should start attacking with FACTS.

Comon man, think before you say such dumb untrue stuff about Barack Obama.

  15. Frank Bill Clinton left with balance bubget because he had a Republican Congress handing a balance budget bill to him to sign.. His term of office did not have a lot of the expensive headaches. Viet Nam, A Democrat War was lost. Not Iraq War. In fact Iraq is confortable enough now to want to take over. Does not sound like we lost the Iraq war.Do you watch the news ? Lost American lives , yes. For a American principal that we have followed though out our history. Too help others. Of course Obama will try to take credit for that. High oil price has runed our econonmy with $700 billion dollars going to middle east each year. Congress has done its best to stop America’s oil being produced. Soon Alaska oil pipe line my close down because of this, then you will see high gas. High gas, sub prime had a lot to do with defisit. Sub prime ordeal added to national debt. All of which is not Bush”s fault..And we have gone though a long upward stock market.. Unfortuneately, it goes up and down on a regular bases. Your facts are weak. All your name calling does not build your statements. Just distracts and makes you seem small.

Its very rare that the “minority” enjoys anything, unless its bush’s oil buddies… or the insanely rich

Barack’s speech was very well done. It touched on a lot of subjects and put to rest a lot of the retarded attacks that have been thrown at him as of late

i used to like mccain when he was a democrat and hadn’t bent over to bush and his cronies after they destroyed him inside and out.

Once the younger crowd (25 and under) gets old enough to have a president from their generation (10-15 years) i dont think there will be another repub for a long time

Kevin, you have a point about Repubs phasing out. Except there is an asterik to it. Repubs in power recently and currently don’t act on the original Republican philosophy anymore. So, their current behavior will phase out (I pray). Hopefully their will be a new generation, whatever they choose to call themselves, that will promote true Republican values. “Trickle Down” is not exactly one of them. That is a BS term for let’s stay rich. The true core of Republican is that our country remain a “Republic”. Long story short, a Republic has less power than we have now at the Federal level. It doesn’t mean there are no social programs to help unfortunates, it just means a Republican believes that State Governments are more efficient at designing and executing them for their citizens. The philosophy is debatable, but is certainly meant to make Government more helpful to its citizens. The Dems want to do it at the Federal level. That is a debate worth having. Not who can call the other Party names in the most creative ways. Although, I admit, a little name calling from time to time can be fun, you Demwits.

  23. Just heard Barack’s speach. I actually liked most of it. As usual, he started in with blaming Bush for most people’s problems (to great applause), and then secondarily stating that its not all governments fault (to small applause). That’s his rheteric that gets under my skin. But he did spend some passionate words on uniting people (ironic after bashing Bush and framing McCain with him). Like disagreeing on abortion, so let’s concentrate on the part we do agree on: reducing unwanted pregnancies. He gave a few other examples like that. That stuff is music to my ears. I still doubt I will vote for him, because I don’t have trust he can deliver as much as he can speak. I just disagree with his big government ideals, and he panders as much as any other Politician.

Win or Lose, I hope he proves to be for real about unity and acts on it more and more through his career. He may one day win my support if he does. But for now I’ll take my chances with McCain’s demonstrations of unity over the last decade. And yes, I know his commercials are full of BS (disappointing lack of honor in them), but so are many of Barack’s words throughout the campaign. Trying to judge who’s the Lesser of two spinners once again. Atleast they’re both better than Bush or Clinton.

Bill, I think I’m starting to like you.

I really don’t see the point of some Republicans trying to smear Obama by using his middle name to try and associate him with radical arabs or one in particular. They say they’re not but that’s exactly what they’re trying to do. Their argument that it is his legal middle name is fair enough, but equally why don’t they use John McCains middle name too?

That reminds me of when that crazy bitch Ann Coulter was on the O’Reilly Factor and she was using Obama’s middle name saying “well it is his middle name” and O’Reilly turned round to her and asked if she knew what McCains was and she was clueless.

  29. Everyone in America, maybe, knows Obama middle name. Same does not hold true for McCain. My Mother used my middle name when I am in trouble. People use middle name that they don’t like to rub them wrong. A few my think of his as a Muslin cut. I do not use his middle name out of respect for this site and both Democrats and Republican. I never say all Democrats are this and that either. Hillary uses 2 names sometimes. Sometimes 3. I read somewhere that Obama had considered changing his middle name for political reason.

  33. I’d have to say that I am a little dissappointed in the posts. This website was not designed for people to bash the beliefs of others and question the intellectual capabilities of politicians, but rather for the public to examine aspects of each politician that they find will be beneficial towards our country. We are not looking for a vast seperation between dems and republicans, we are looking for a compromise. I’d have to say I am ashamed that our free speech has led to so many ignorant posts.

  35. This site has gotten some bad apples. Good thing I missed all the bad stuff in this thread. I am disappointed in how someone can be a racist or make all out racist comments and get defended by someone of the same party affiliation.

Michelle is the only person I’ve seen do this. Someone made some really out of order comments about McCain and she stood up
and called them out saying that they were not doing Obama supporters any good. I came right behind and told her how she was right.

But the Obama haters do not care as long as they have one thing in common. Hating Obama or hating liberals in General.
Someone can say the nastiest and most cruel things about a race and get supported. It makes me wonder if they secretly support the same divisive views and are not brave enough to voice them until someone else does it as well.
I guess the KKK, Neo Nazis or all the other white supremacist
group all vote in their best interest for a reason.
I know there are some racist democrats but those hate groups don’t subscribe to those beliefs for nothing.
Anyone who doesn’t want people who stereotype conservatives as being this way should all stand up and attack someone who acts like this. A liberal or democrat doing it doesn’t hold as much weight because it is viewed as “us versus” them”.
And people wonder why at the RNC conventions why the presence of minorities is almost non existent. You don’t go where you are not welcome. Even if you hold the same beliefs.

  36. nz, no, you’re reversing the causalities. McCain and Obama find themselves along different polarities because of how the media and the PEOPLE respond. The Parties, in the end, are empty shells– fulfilled only by the donation of cash and the volunteering of peoples.

we have made some leaps and bounds as a country during this year. I realize these posts do not necessarily reflect it, but look at the four candidates- none of these would have stood a chance before the Bush administration. I am personally proud of these four people, who they are, and what they have accomplished. I might not see eye to eye with some of their policies, but they have worked hard to get beyond some of the typical politics in Washington.

True, we’re going to witness some setbacks and some old tricks of the trade. Changes like this are slow in coming, but we should be supportive and optimistic.
