Day 1: The Democratic National Convention (Update)

Day 1: The Democratic National Convention (Update)

Tonight the opening speaker will be Michelle Obama, we’ll have her full speech once it is delivered later. During the convention this week most of my coverage here at You Decide 2008 will focus on the Democrats. Of course, the same consideration will be given for the Republicans during their convention beginning September 1st.

Here is a continual run down of the stories and video coming out from the first day of the 2008 Democratic convention.

Report from Yahoo News on the opening prayers:

DENVER - At the first official event Sunday of the Democratic National Convention, a choir belted out a gospel song and was followed by a rabbi reciting a Torah reading about forgiveness and the future.

Helen Prejean, the Catholic nun who wrote “Dead Man Walking,” assailed the death penalty and the use of torture.

Young Muslim women in headscarves sat near older African-American women in their finest Sunday hats.

Four years ago, such a scene would have been unthinkable at a Democratic National Convention. In 2004, there was one interfaith lunch at the Democratic gala in Boston.

But that same year, “values voters” helped re-elect President Bush, giving Democrats of faith the opening they needed to make party leaders listen to them.

The result was on display at Sunday’s interfaith service, staged in a theater inside the Colorado Convention Center, and will be evident throughout the convention agenda and on the sidelines.

There will be four “faith caucus” meetings, blessings to open and close each night, and panels and parties run by Democratic-leaning religious advocacy groups that didn’t even exist in 2004 — not to mention protests from religious groups and leaders opposed to the Democratic platform.

Caroline Kennedy gives a tribute to “Uncle Teddy”:

Update

The tribute played for Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy:

Ted Kennedy delivering his remarks:

Story on Kennedy’s remarks from Yahoo News:

DENVER - Ailing and aging, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy summoned fellow Democrats to rally behind Barack Obama’s pioneering quest for the White House Monday night, providing a poignant opening to a party convention in search of unity for the fall campaign.

“The work begins anew, the hope rises again and the dream lives on,” Kennedy said in a strong voice, reprising the final line of a memorable 1980 speech that brought a different convention to its feet. The senator has been undergoing treatment for a malignant brain tumor.

Update

The short biography of Michelle Obama prior to her speech:

Video of Michelle Obama’s entire speech:

Report from AOL News:

DENVER (AP) - Michelle Obama declared “I love this country” Monday as she sought to reassure the nation that she and her husband Barack share Americans’ bedrock values and belief in a dream of a better future.

In the first major address at the Democratic National Convention, Michelle Obama described herself as a daughter, a sister, a wife and a mother, no different from many women. She told a boisterous crowd waving signs reading “Michelle” that she and her husband feel an obligation to “fight for the world as it should be” to ensure the promise of a better life for their daughters and all children.

Michelle Obama talked about tucking in her daughters Malia and Sasha at night.

“I think about how one day, they’ll have families of their own. And one day, they - and your sons and daughters - will tell their own children about what we did together in this election. They’ll tell them how this time, we listened to our hopes, instead of our fears. How this time, we decided to stop doubting and to start dreaming,” she said.

Michelle Obama’s mission was to humanize her husband and convince skeptical voters to look past his unusual name and exotic background to envision him as the next president. Barack Obama has repeatedly faced questions about whether he’s a real American.

She also used the address to dismiss questions about her patriotism. Republicans have criticized her comments earlier this year that she was “really proud” of her country for the first time. Her answer at the convention was to express her love of country.

The Obamas’ two daughters joined their mother on stage after the speech as Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” blared from in the convention hall.

They spoke to Barack Obama, who appeared by satellite connection from Missouri.

“How about Michelle Obama?” he asked the crowd. “Now you know why I asked her out so many times even though she said no. You want a persistent president.”

The girls responded to their father on the giant screen with “Hi, Daddy!” and “I love you, Daddy.”

A pretty mild day overall with the exception perhaps of Ted Kennedy. Michelle Obama’s speech was basically what I expected, nothing too groundbreaking. I will be looking forward to Hillary Clinton speaking Tuesday night.

We’ll have Tuesday’s events and important video coming tomorrow, stay tuned for more coverage!

  1. I love finding obscure reports. =) This one is from the WSJ reporter covering the convention.

You’ll see from this report that the government always lies when it’s caught red-handed. This lady came back to her hotel room during the DNC and found someone attempting to bug her phone. The hotel’s official story is that the phones have malfunctioned. But who believes them?

    Report Comment

  3. Cs- I can not read the article. I have eye problems. The print is not readable to me. She is activist according to first few lines. Saying you are being bugged can be plow for her over valued importants. Was there proof that she was right ? If true, I would guess it hit the major news media widely. Frankly I have not watched news yet today. I plan on doing that durning Convention hours

    Report Comment

  4. I’m sorry you have eye problems, Bill. That must make it real tough. Yes, she is an activist of the kind that wants to expand government’s role in people’s lives. I suppose that, to me, makes her testimony more convincing and believable, because even one who desires expanded government does not like the infringements of privacy it leads to. I don’t think you’ll find this widely talked about in the news media. But I don’t know of any other evidence that this is going on, other than that it is perfectly in line with what I’ve read elsewhere HAPPENS EVERY DAY, sponsored by the government EVERY TIME.

    Report Comment

  5. If I understand you right, she believes in government ease dropping. I do. Not every day citizens. For terrorist purpose. If she was, assumption, having have it happening to her, it would make more sense it was someone or group other than our government. A check with phone company to see if hotel was telling truth would be first thing I would do. I believe a lot of things. And feel I have cause for some of it. But am i right. That is where I am coming from. What were the actions that lead to her concluded this

  6. My fellow Americans,

In the past, there have been many American’s who have not used their right to vote for who represents them. The founding fathers gave us this right so that the power could be held by the people, and by not using it, we are leaving the power among the elite few. As there is an election coming up, we must participate in this right. I am currently involved with a video trying to convince Americans to do so. It is unbiased, and we hope it will inspire others to do their part.

The video can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/wa.....4kg514DcTA

All feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

  7. I don’t know, Bill. I don’t know that I can assume it was done to every room. There are, like you indicate, many ways to look at things. What do you think about the iron cages they set up in Denver to prepare for riots at the DNC? The news media got a glimpse of ‘em, and they had no bathroom facilities in the cells or beds: just cages. What are your impressions? (My uncle, who works for the city, ocnfirms their existence.)

    Report Comment

  8. CS- I was raised Democrat. My Mother votes that way because she was raised that way. My bother and I have chosen Republican Party. To be honest, I do not watch the on going Convention. With that said. No one should be put in a cell without a minium of drinklng water and toliet. Maybe guards will take those who need to use rest room to one. I prey the cell is only very tempory. With quick response from police to pick up the arrested. I know Democrats are good people. I am sure arrested will be well cared for. Obviuosly if arrested was misteated there would be bad press for DNC……And they know that..

    Report Comment

  9. CS–Mcain was on The tonight show tonight. He and Biden have been close friends for years. McCain said that Biden and Obaba recently said some incorrect things. Unfortuneately I do not recall what McCain said. I was busy. I am sure these things will be in upcoming ads. If you caught Jay Leno tonight, what did you think.

    Report Comment

  10. If some people are going to behave like animals then they should be treated like animals.

The cages I would image is only a quick-fix temporary facility where they can contain a lot of people causing trouble very quickly. Unfortunately some loons take protesting to a completely different level and go completely mental hell bent causing trouble, which is a shame.

I don’t understand the people protesting that they want the troops out of Iraq, when it’s the Dems who’s wanting to get the troops out of Iraq….WTF? I think some of them have peaked too soon and ended up at the wrong convention.

    Report Comment

  11. Why do you call Iraq a Republican war. Congress voted for the war. Congress has voted for every war budget, Including when the Democrats were in power. Even Obama says withdraw would not be immemediate. I believe a persons action more than their words. Especially politicians. Especially Democrates. Democrats put 1/3 of entire budget for pork belly in a Iraq war budget not long ago.. Bush had to veto.

    Report Comment

  12. War in Iraq is used to fight more than terrorist by Democrats in Congress. If war goes well in America voters eyes, Democrats can take credit. If war goes badly by American voters, Democrats can blame President for the war. Congress alas gives up its Constitutional rights to control war. And uses it as a political tool.

    Report Comment

  13. NZ, I think you give the DNC too much credit on these cages. It hasn’t been much covered by the media, but in the last few years protesters have been locked up in inhumane conditions for days on end, and basic rights have been denied to them including: Food, sleeping area (cells packed so it’s standing room only), medical attention, needed medications, phone calls, ect.), and any actual charges against them.

Mind you, it’s entirely illegal to even hold someone for more than 24 hours without charging them with a crime, and in some cases - like the protesters of the last RNC - the police department was fined $1000 per person for this, but Guliani complimented them on their work, none the less.

I personally know someone who endured that treatment in Chicago when protesting the Iraq war, and we’re not talking people behaving like animals. We’re talking about civil protesters held for days and denied the amenities we generally afford even our worst criminals.

It’s not a happy trend to see America treating it’s citizens as if they have no rights. But it would be a mistake to not to recognize it.

    Report Comment

  14. Indi,

I have watched the protesters in Denver and they are certainly not acting very civil. They tried to physically intimitade a fox news reporter so that he couldn’t conduct an interview…If they want the right to free speech, they should not step on other peoples throats when they want the same.

    Report Comment

  15. iN0 i am heading for DNC now. I will get put in their jail My friend will tape it. And you think Rodney King got rich suing LA, I’ll buy a island and live like a KING off my money from DNC. gee whiz, I wonder why that has not happened to DNC before for this. hummm

    Report Comment

  16. There is some video footage that made it out of the protests I mentioned, Bill. They try to confiscate such devices, but they’re just too portable these days. I was able to watch some footage on the internet from the RNC protest 4 years ago in NY, I’m not sure if you could still find it now, but you might be able to. I don’t think anyone got rich though

The way they do it is if there’s a protest on a street, police cut off both ends and arrest every person in between (not just people acting like ‘animals’, my friend said they even got a few people who weren’t part of the protest).

Whether or not they deserve their treatment can be argued I guess. I’m just saying, even child rapists get meals, space to lie down, and medical treatment when they need it.

    Report Comment

  17. I should also add that after having endured that treatment, my friend was given a minor charged which was immediately tossed out of court.

If a policeman treats you like an animal - but cannot or will not pursue your actions through the American justice system - that policeman is breaking the law he has sworn to uphold. He should be fired and jailed, because that IS the law. Unfortunately it does not seem to be common practice.

    Report Comment

  18. It is not breaking the if someone is arrested and the pros. attorny drops the charges. Sorry. I was being sacastic. Treatment you describe would have hundreds of the finest lawyers chasing you to defend you for mistreatment. Free. Look at Rodney King. And oh so many more. Class action suites occur with multiple mistreated persons. You should watch Jail and police real life shows. Not movies..Movies is not real. You will see medical care. Police now a days do a lot of taping. To help stop false charges fron people and have record of officers action. Is there bad cops. Of coutse. Are there dishonest citizens. Oh yes. Citizens will slant their stories to make themselves look good. Don’t believe everything someone tells you. You can rest assure the DNC streets and jail are taped

    Report Comment

  19. I am no expert, but police can not keep recording devices. Under certain curcumsstances I guess they can. But recording a riot on a public street I don’t think would be taken. Unless it was needed for evidence. No matter how much people want to believe all your rights have been taken and the government does whatever it wants. Its not true. Lawyers make a good living in America

    Report Comment

  20. The whole group of peaceful protesters are being arrested because of an unruly few. Alex Jones–regardless of how any of you feel about his views–yesterday was investigating the DNC situation and doing nothing “wrong” except getting close to the prisons that were built for protesters. The cameraman with him filmed the policeman mauling Alex and then shouting that Alex started the fight, and then attempting to seize the cameraman’s camera. Our police force and our military are being trained for brutality.

    Report Comment

  21. I understand your skepticism - I didn’t really believe this was happening either, until I had both read about it, seen believable footage, and then become acquainted with someone it had happened to. This person is a good friend.

But whether it has happened is much less important than whether it will continue to happen. This Denver prison that has been uncovered makes me very nervous, because generally civil liberties are considered a “liberal” thing, and I would hope the DNC doesn’t dabble in that. Doesn’t much surprise me though.

Anyway, don’t take my word for it. If this is turning into common practice, I think everyone will hear about it sooner or later.

    Report Comment

  22. CS I agree with you in many respects. Government being inherety bad I do not believe. I never was a cop. I did work with some. Trained to be brutal is harsh. I disagree.. My guess is prison area was located in a restricted area, it would have to be. If he tresspassed, he could be removed or arrested. I am near 100% sure police cameras are there and situation was taped. Thus that man you speak of may not want to sue. But he can say whatever he wants about it outside the court room. Where the tape would be shown. As far as all protesters being arrested, could they to be in restricted area.

    Report Comment

  23. I am a Republican. I would find it to McCain interest if DNC was practicing illegal methods. I personal can not believe they are. But, if you are Right. Hang them

    Report Comment

  24. Thanks for that CS, I found Alex had a lot to say on this subject

    http://video.google.com/v.....&vt=lf

And there’s a slightly more distanced report about the whole affair too, for anyone who cares to see
    http://video.google.com/v.....&vt=lf

  25. I am going to guess that there are 100’s of satalite trucks there at the DNC. With 100’s more news people. Of every idealology amangeable. Then there are private groups as well as 1,000 ofpeople with telephone with recorders. With all this, mistreatment by at least one policeman should have been recorded. And sold to a news organization. Does this not make sense

    Report Comment

  26. Alex Jones was taped being mauled by his camera man. Police tried to take but could not. That seems doubtful. But O.K. This tape of his would spread like wild fire on many channels. Alex Jones would be a house hold name. If it doesn’t, then Alex Jones has a critiblity problem with me. Alex will have a excuss. I know nothing about this guy.

    Report Comment

  27. I didn’t mean to imply that the police force is totally awful, just that it is evolving into one that resembles Nazis or Soviets, evinced by how it is more and more monitoring every aspect of people’s lives. I don’t think these prison camps are going to be made public by the mainstream media, or that the people operating these prison camps are going to be held accountable if they start to torture. The government mandated the creation of the concentration camps, and naturally it knows what those conditions can lead to. I am not an anarchist, but I do fear how the federal government is seizing ever greater power and getting away with abuses. When has the IRS been held accountable for breaking into people’s houses and holding them at gunpoint?

Alex Jones doesn’t get acknowledged by the media because he attempts to point out the dangerous centralization of power that’s continuing under the Bush administration, and most people like Rush Limbaugh and FAUX News are so militantly supportive of Bush that they don’t give him a bit of acknowledgement.

    Report Comment

  28. Congress passes laws. Not President. I know of no mandated prison camp or consentration camp. Please explain. Are you talking about for the terrorist. Would appreciate response to the messages recently. I do think Alex can sue with the tape if he has. Or get it aired. if such a tape truely does exist. And why has not one of all the cameras or phones cameras at dnc not given a tape to news. Or lawsuites filed. It is hard to believe. Lawsuies for police wrong behavior occurr all the time. And compesation rewarded.

  29. CS I I have a theory. You might light. Democrats have been making oil drilling rough. By legal restictions and regulations. If oil suppy gets to low in Alaska, America will lose that oil. So much oil is necessary to flow it here by pipeline. We lose that oil. Watch out. regulation adds years to oil production. Lawsuites as well. Here is the point– cheap oil, little GREEN ENERGY. Don’t expect Democrats to admit they want high oil price. You know why. We would have a 100% republican congress. They blame green house gases. They They use to call it Global warming. No more. They noe call it Global Change. Reason, the world is not warming.

    Report Comment

  30. Have they really changed the name to “Global Change” from “Global Warming”?? That’s interesting. Yes, it is way too partisan, and when Congress acts in a bipartisan fashion, it usually seems to involve the extreme socialists who try to sacrifice our national sovereignty.

    Report Comment

  31. Yes they did. Watch Green Ads. I live in Missouri. There use to be a Glacier around here. Every so often in history it broke up and went rolling into the Gulf. Africia in decades have been all green to not. Climate of earth changes. If you are old enough, you will remember a horrible announcementt that there was a whole in the ozone. I worked in Health Dept. at that time. I found out they had just put up a new weather satilite. Then came the whole story.. Reason, the old one did not measure zero. That whole could have been there forever. Whose knows. Also, temperature gauges where placed around America to keep track of temperature. It was descovered they placed them next to air conditioners, on asphalt, etc. Giving a hotter reading. I watched Alex on the news show. He did not show his tape of being mauled. He losed credibility with me. A lot of holes to me in his talk

  32. Indi, yeah being locked up in cages days on end is a little out of order, overnight at most is probably what’s needed.

Bill, Iraq is a Republican war. Congress was controlled by Republicans when it was passed all them many moons ago.

I think Global Change is much better than Global Warming, it’s less alarmist. People and industry should go green just because it’s better for the environment and not because the world is about to end like what some doomsayers are making out.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/w.....nd_Pier_57

I know, it’s wikipedia, not the most reliable source. But it provides some details, and if you care enough to look around the net there’s a lot of information about that particular incident. Whether or not you believe it - well that’s your judgment call, my friend. But I don’t see where shame comes into it, either way.
