At the same time Obama is set to announce his VP choice this week, sources in the McCain campaign have revealed that McCain’s choice may be disclosed on August 29th at an Ohio campaign stop. This is the day after Obama takes the nomination at the Democratic Convention.
Story from Politico:
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) plans to celebrate his 72nd birthday on Aug. 29 by naming his running mate at a huge rally in the battleground state of Ohio, Republican sources said.
That’s a week from this Friday, and the day after Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) accepts the Democratic nomination at a 70,000-person spectacular in a Denver stadium.
The campaign has begun building a crowd of 10,000 for Dayton, Ohio, according to an organizer. McCain is scheduled to appear with his running mate at a large-scale event in Pennsylvania shortly thereafter.
Senior Republicans are in the dark about who he’ll name, although they say former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty are prime contenders after a trial balloon by McCain gave him very negative feedback about the idea of picking a pro-choice running mate like former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge.
Sources close to McCain say he has wrestled with the choice, torn between a high-stakes, high-reward pick like Ridge or Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman or a safer and more conventional selection such as Romney or Pawlenty.
But McCain friends emphasized that he talks about the decision with almost no one, and could even change the announcement plans and go sooner.
“McCain views this as the one decision that he has total, utter, non-negotiable control over,†one campaign official said.
I’ve heard Tom Ridge’s name floated around lately, however, I’m betting it will be someone with more conservative appeal.
More as this develops as well…

If a “conservative” such as Bobby Jindal were selected as McCain’s VP, I wouldn’t take the bait. To me, rather than showing that McCain is conservative, it would indicate that the so-called “conservative” VP is a fiend. “Fiend” is not too strong a word for John McCain. I am baffled at how anyone can think he was trying to do the right thing with McCain-Kennedy. It’s very reminiscent of how Eisenhower pursued leftist causes as a Republican President, and yet the media made him out to be naive instead of deliberately violating the Constitution.
I’m not sure why they wait to announce VP’s. I’d think that the one who does it first will create the biggest buzz. Well, whoever announces it first is a smart guy.
C.S.
And if you look in the past it was the Democrats who wanted to spread democracy with war to everyone and the Republicans were more conservative and were ending wars Democrats were starting.
These people aren’t even a shadow of what the conservatives from Regan on back were. And since when did a violation of the Constitution become okay as long as you do it in the name of protecting us? People gobble that up and are almost asking them what other freedoms and liberties can we give up in return for more safety. But no matter how insane this sounds there are people who consider themselves conservatives who defend these NEW principles.
Dreadsen,
It is spelled as President Reagan not Regan, ok.
We fully agree, Dreadsen!
Dreadsen and Chris, why don’t we just say that McCain could choose Jesus Himself as his running mate, and neither of you would “take the bait”. So why even have a discussion about it?
Actually, I’m thinking Obama should just go ahead and choose Nancy Pelosi as his running mate. They are two peas in a pod, she is over the moon for him - raising over $7 million dollars for him just this weekend - and is holding the entire Congress and the american people hostage to give her boy time to get in the White House and kiss her ass. Who could be a more fitting running mate for him than her.
Babs, Christ himself could be Obama’s running mate and you’d still probably see nothing but fire and brimstone in him. Everyone’s biased, but that doesn’t detract from the validity of one’s speculation in and of itself.
I kind of want McCain to pick Lieberman- it’d be quite a show then. I highly doubt it though. My money’s on Pawlenty- Jindal straight up said he didn’t want it and Romney comes with a lot of baggage. The evangelical vote is valuable to him, and I could see some of it jump ship if Romney were elected.
I heard speculation that Obama is likely to choose Biden. Somehow I doubt it, but I would like it- I liked Biden’s performance in the Democratic primaries.
Babs, does it not bother you that McCain said “we are all God’s children” as his rationale for continuing illegal immigration? That is a clue right there that he is a universalist. Jesus would NOT endorse John McCain, because He said “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by Me.” McCain’s universalistic stance, that all of us are God’s children, is completely contrary to Jesus’ condition that only those who receive Him will become His children.
Has it come to this? We are actually considering who Jesus would endorse? He was human just like the rest of us, so I suppose he could make the same mistake to believe he was the “son of god,” as well as making a mistake with who he would endorse. Tough call.
Perhaps if there was a communist on the ticket (since Jesus was about taking care of people rather than leaving them to fend for themselves) he might endorse him. I detest communism, but that Jesus guy seems pretty popular so I won’t argue with public perception.
I think Zeus might go for McCain, but as for Venus, who knows? Any other fictional characters we should toss in for their political leanings? Bugs Bunny is surely an Obama man.
What’s up flock?
Anyway, good blog. Keep it up.

Wow, what a ridiculous side rant this thread has gone in, but I can’t resist =D… to correct your apparent lack of understanding C.S., God made all of us, therefore “we are all God’s children” and God loves us all as his children regardless of the misguided ways some of us take ourselves into. The content of your quote from the bible is associated with going to heaven when a person dies.
As for the jab at McCain in immigration, yeah, he has a rocky past with immigration. I will give you that, but you need to look at Obama’s and McCain’s stance in Immigration. The intended outcome of both plans are very similar with a few differences in how to get there. Both support some sort of amnesty for current illegals though.
I am baffled at how anyone can think he was trying to do the right thing with McCain-Kennedy. It’s very reminiscent of how Eisenhower pursued leftist causes as a Republican President, and yet the media made him out to be naive instead of deliberately violating the Constitution.
Maybe I missed something with McCain-Kennedy, but I don’t see where it associates itself with leftist/socialist views, and how offering a solution to a rampant problem (Immigration) we have in the U.S. is a violation of the constitution.
I also do not see the connection of Dreadsen’s post with your initial post as it is apparent that he was replying to you, but again unless I am missing something has nothing to do with what you were trying to communicate.
Help me to understand?
The first paragraph was supposed to be a quote from C.S. =p My apologies, I forgot to put the quotes in…
Chris, McCain has no intention of continuing illegal immigration, what are you smoking? And Jeremy is correct, you’re so far offbase with your scripture reference, I’m not even going there.
Grey, Leiberman’s ok with me too, I like Jindal, but as you said, he believes his job in La. is not finished, he still has time for other things.
Interesting to note on Obama (I posted this to his VP thread), rumors are flying this morning. Seems the Obama Campaign has secured OBAMASEBELIUS.COM through godaddy.com, the server for barackobama.com, and companies working for the campaign verify that a VP website is being built. What do you think? Would an Obama/Sebelius ticket be a good thing? What are the Hillary supporters going to think of it?
Not everyone is God’s child: see John 1:12.
McCain was speaking in universalistic terms, and perhaps even pantheistic. It does provide an explanation for his fanatic environmentalism. Regarding McCain-Kennedy, it would have granted amnesty for all illegal immigrants, and who would have paid for their privileges in society? The legal residents! That’s socialism: robbing from the rich to give to the poor.
Babs, how can you say McCain seeks to end illegal immigration? He just visited La Raza, which is advocating the overthrow of the United States.
Chris, McCain wants to end illegal immigration. he wants to build a border and wants all illegal criminals to be deported right away. Second stop with the Bible because you have been wrong and it is just annoying to see you try to use it when you are not doing it correctly. Third, if you want to talk about socialism than all you have to do is look at your own party and Barack Obama, who has many views that are on the border of socialism. The real socialism is universal healthcare.
I don’t belong to the Dem or Rep Party, O_S. And can’t you do better than say “you’re wrong”? How am I wrong? And why do you believe McCain’s word about ending illegal immigration? Before Super Tuesday, he was saying he would treat every illegal as an individual and make numerous exceptions for deporting them.
The fact that O_S believes real socialism is just about universal healthcare proves how ignorant they are.
However, I do agree in wanting to end illegal immigration, build a stronger border and deport illegal criminals straight away.

“However, I do agree in wanting to end illegal immigration, build a stronger border and deport illegal criminals straight away.”
Wow, I’m impressed. I’m glad that we agree on this one.
Forget just deporting the criminals that come from there. Send them our criminals to and save US tax payers some more money.
Have you seen the list of the guests of honor at McCain’s event? There’s Arnold Schwarzenegger, George and Laura Bush, Mitt Romney, Mike Yuckabee (sic), Rudy Giuliani, and a host of other left-wingers. One of the few you could consider “conservative” is Fred Thompson, who was probably invited because he was a major Republican contender and is close with McCain.
What’s worse is that the entire convention will focus on a different positive aspect of McCain’s character each day. How self-centered does he have to show himself to be before people realize he would say anything to get the Presidency?
Left-wingers?????????? George Bush, Mike Huckabee - left wingers???? Chris, what in god’s name are you smoking?
Left: big, centralized government under a centralized bank
Right: small government that leaves other nations alone (unless they are agressors)
Do you know about Mike Huckabee’s record as AK governor, Babs? Take a brief look at what he did to centralize education and attempt to control what foods people eat. And take a look at George Bush’s “No Child Left Behind”, which is a centralized education plan that is NOT LEFT TO THE STATES (even though the Constitution says it should be). How about the Bush administration spending more than it makes because it borrows from the Federal Reserve? And pushing for the provision of amnesty for illegals, against the will of well over 3/4 of Americans? If McCain-Kennedy (the bill Bush endorsed) had passed, Americans would now be paying for illegals’ livelihoods far more than we are doing now!
George Bush most Liberal President since Johnson.
1. Spent more then any previous president( even excluding the war)
2. Immigration bill
3. Increases national debt
4. More social programs then any previous president
But as long as he does these things in the name of the GOP he will be defended.
I’m reading a 1958 book about Eisenhower, who got away with the same stuff because he was a “Republican”. And yet, like John McCain, he almost became Democrat candidate in the 1948 presidential election! He also was as passionate about saving the Soviet Union as FDR. It explains why he sent so much “foreign aid” to “stop communism” in eastern Europe, and how communism was actually strengthened instead.
C.S.
“It explains why he sent so much “foreign aid†to “stop communism†in eastern Europe, and how communism was actually strengthened instead.”
That is like the war on terror. We send all the foreign aid to Pakistan to fight the war on terror but instead they actually strengthen it.
John McCain did not come close to being a Democrat candidate. Just because Biden wants John McCain to be in White House, does not mean John McCain will do it as a Democrat. Obviously he did not,,,,,, almost do it….. There was no serious talk about that on McCain part. He made a statement when that came out that he was not interested. Please explain how foreighn aid made communism stronger. Plase give details.
Dreaden– Who passes spending Bills ? Who passes Social Program Bills. You are giving Bush much too much credit. CONGRESS passes BILLS. President can only 1 not sign and it becomes law, 2 sign and it becomes law, or 3 veto. Then it fails unless CONGRESS can override the veto. By the way, CONGRESS passed Iraq war bills and funding bills. CONGRESS did the same thing for John Kennedy’s war,, VIET NAM. Question to you . Did Bush cause world gas price to rise ? NO. Countries with low gas prices are generally oil exporters. Or countries like China that subsidises gas prices
McCain almost became Kerry’s running mate. That’s what I meant.
Dreadsen, isn’t painting Bush as a liberal a bit dangerous? That would make OBAMA Bush’s 3rd term, as Obama is the most liberal senator on the Hill. Hmm, interesting theory, maybe one McCain should expound on.
CS Amost IMPLIES John Kerry or his associates talked to John McCain or his associates. Maybe I am wrong. Did the two ,, ALMOST,, come to a arrangemet for John to be V.P. NO. The only statement THAT IS TRUE is Biden wanted John McCain in WHITE HOUSE as a Democrate FOR kERRY. And Biden says is does not want Obama in the WHITE HOUSE. UNTIL BIDEN WAS ASKED TO BE v.p.
http://www.nytimes.com/20.....ry,%20John - McCain was part of the negotiations, Bill.
CS I stand corrected. I made mistate. I appreciate someone like you that is polite in his language on this vehile of communication and is factual in his views. This kind of ruins Obama view that McCain is a copy cat 3rd term Bush.
