Obama drops “unofficial” Presidential Seal

After a bit of outcry from some factions on the campaign trail, the Obama campaign dropped the faux “Obama Presidential Seal” which was displayed over the weekend.

Video report from CBS News:

Report from USAToday:

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — A presidential seal graphically altered with symbols representing Barack Obama’s campaign of change was just for one-time use and will not be used again, a spokeswoman for the Democrat’s campaign said Monday.

The seal, with its blue background and an eagle in the center clutching arrows and an olive branch, evoked the official presidential version, but had been altered with a new Latin phrase, instead of the original “E pluribus unum,” which means, “Out of many, one.”

Obama’s campaign changed the phrase to “Vero possumus,” which can be roughly translated to his “Yes, we can” slogan. The seal also featured his “O” campaign logo covering the eagle’s body, instead of a shield.

When the altered seal was unveiled last Friday in Chicago, it raised eyebrows and prompted comments about how presidential it looked. The Republican National Committee gleefully ridiculed it as a prop.

Jen Psaki, a spokeswoman for Obama’s campaign, said Monday that the altered seal would not be used again. She said it was only intended for that event, in which Obama held a round-table discussion with Democratic governors.

Don’t really know if I care too much about this other than it seems a bit presumptive, don’t you think?

  1. Nate, I was just thinking the other day about how much I liked Obama’s graphics, like that seal and the O with the flag. Presumtuous, maybe, but regardless of where you stand, you have to admit that they’ve got some great marketing and graphic-design people. I just read a great article last week in INC. Magazine about how the success of his campaing points to shifts in marketing trends, and what these trends mean in regards to business.

  2. It’s interesting that anything about this symbol has come to light. I’ve been noticing the distorted symbols used on his website - especially the backdrop of all pages, in which that symbol does carry the “E pluribus unum” phrase. I don’t think it’s such a big deal, except to show the arrogance of the man. You have to have a big pair, in my opinion, to distort trademarked federal symbols just to get across subliminal messages.

  3. Sumliminal messages? Well I guess it’s better than playing to America’s fears and prejudices to gain support.

Funny story about McSame’s fear-monger ads, though. The other day I saw that McCain ad banner that says: “Is it OK to unconditionally meet Anti-American foreign leaders?”. It asks YES or NO, and I clicked YES, but all it did was bring me to the McSame website. I wonder how many people clicked yes?

  4. Yes, Josh, subliminal messages, it’s actually a viable marketing technique, using visuals to implant an idea. It’s rather common.

“McSame’s fear-monger ads”? Would you like to play rhyming games with both names? I can play. ;)

  5. Well, i know what subliminal messages are, but the way it came across was like something from the 60’s era mind control techniques. Real subliminal messages (those too deep for the conscious mind to see or hear) aren’t legal, but the quasi-subliminal marketing techniques marketing people use now are ubiquitous. I’m not sure this qualifies, though.

Rhyme all you want, but McSame is still better…lol
