McCain sat down with ABC’s Charlie Gibson earlier this evening for a little chat about how he sees the election shaping up. McCain played a bit of expectations management and painted himself as the underdog, perhaps expecting Obama to take a decent lead from his nomination bounce.
Short video from ABC News:
Underdog indeed.

… What’s his appeal?
What is it with the candidates jockeying for the “underdog” status? who cares. I just don’t get America’s need for an underdog, I’d settle for a leader, however, there are none to be had this election season.
This underdogg thing is getting tired. Its like a title everyone wants to claim…Did he see Rocky VI?
Well, let’s note here McCain didn’t jump up and say Hey I’m the Underdog. If media journalists would stop asking such stupid questions he wouldn’t be put in a position to label himself, now would he?
Will someone please explain to me why Fred THompson didn’t win the nomination again?
PLEASE!!!
Melvin, the reason I hear most often is that he waited too late to throw his hat in the ring. I don’t know if that’s true, but that’s the comment I hear most often about his candidacy.
Melvin,
I’m with you. Fred was my guy and I even gave him some $$. I think it was a combination of getting in too late and not looking comfortable in the first couple debates. It’s a shame.
Melvin, it was a sad day in January when Fred announced he was withdrawing from the race. I had been following him since last March in hopes he would be the next President. I too gave to his campaign faithfully. I think the main reason he did not win the nomination is b/c he was following too closely to his old campaign strategies when he was running for a senate seat in TN. This race has proved to be different. I honestly don’t believe it was b/c he waited to long to jump in. This is the first presidential race in history that has heated up so soon, and I’m fatigued with the whole mess.
Both candidates were “underdogs” in their respective primary contests, and I think there is still an inclination to garner that sympathy for the underdog to rally supporters.
At the same time, Babs makes a good point, McCain wasn’t asking for this… but is his thought that he is the underdog carried over from the primary? The same question could be asked of Obama.
I think CG is right though WE NEED A LEADER. This is an election for President of the most powerful country on Earth. The last thing we need is someone that would even answer a question that they are the underdog. I want a President that would answer that question saying “I’m not the underdog. My opponent isn’t even in my league”. That is how McCain should have answered that question if he felt strong enough about it.
I may be wrong but I thought McCain was known for having a strong character.
This guy looks so old and unwell.
Melvin, I think the “underdog” is considered to be whoever is behind in the polls, and McCain is (within the margin of error, but behind). I think if he had come out and said what you said, he would have caught more flack for that. It was one of those questions that just shouldn’t have been asked. Obama has been calling himself the underdog in this race since it’s inception.
