Obama takes nomination, McCain speaks in Louisiana

Before the night is over, Barack Obama will be crowned the Democratic nominee which will officially kick off the general election between him and John McCain. Word is that Hillary Clinton has become “open” to the possibility of the vice presidential slot for Obama’s candidacy.

Of course, the South Dakota and Montana primary results are coming in which you can follow here.

A report on the day’s events from MyWay:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois sealed the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, a historic step toward his once-improbable goal of becoming the nation’s first black president. A defeated Hillary Rodham Clinton maneuvered for the vice presidential spot on his fall ticket.

Obama’s victory set up a five-month campaign with Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a race between a 46-year-old opponent of the Iraq War and a 71-year-old former Vietnam prisoner of war and staunch supporter of the current U.S. military mission.

McCain was plainly eager for the race to begin, and accused his younger rival of voting “to deny funds to the soldiers who have done a brilliant and brave job” in Iraq.

In remarks prepared for delivery in New Orleans, McCain agreed with Obama that the presidential race would focus on change. “But the choice is between the right change and the wrong change, between going forward and going backward,” he added.

Video report from ABC News:

Clinton supporter Geraldine Ferraro isn’t too pleased:

We’ll have video of each speech as they’re delivered later this evening. Furthermore, the question remains what Hillary Clinton will say in her speech, will she concede anything or concede everything? Nobody really knows at this point, however, Obama will be hitting the 2,118 delegate number soon.

Update

About 5 minutes of McCain’s speech:

  1. That angry woman in the Geraldine Ferraro video spat out the words “black male” with quite a bit of derision. Sounded darn racist and sexist to me.

  2. I hate speculation. Clinton has been saying that she’d carry this race to convention, and she still can- whether or not Barack hits the 2118 mark.

I’m not believe anything until Hillary says something straight out.

  3. McCain is trying to distance himself from Bush by portraying himself as a more environmentally friendly candidate. Nice subliminal message with that green background!

  5. Well after watching both speaches I think I can say with some conviction Obama will not be looking to pick up Hillary as a VP. He quickly moved on to attacking McCain while declaring himself the nominee thus leading me to believe he is trying to push Hillary as far out of his mind as he can in order to seperate himself as the clear winner and I don’t think he believes he can do so by picking her up as the VP.

Hillary of course gave us more of nothing, still refusing to give up. That had to be one of the most aggrivating moments in recent political history as I think we all looked on for some finality to this spectacle.

  6. I like how Obama attacked McCain but if McCain attacks Obama without being attacked already, Obama comes back to say this is the type of change i want, no more attack politics, when really it is Obama that does all the attacking, very hypocritical.

Off-topic but I would like to know if anyone has heard of this video surficing about Michelle Obama and i believe Farrakhan giving a speech together in which she refers to white people as “whitey”. has anyone heard anything about this, im curious.

  7. Told ya’ll Hillary wasn’t going to go peacefully into that good night. ;)

O_S, I posted yesterday on another thread that Bob Beckel appeared on FoxNews yesterday (and gave the video link) and said he believed the rumor that something was going to come out today concerning Michelle, and to quote him “and Hillary will be the nominee”. There have been rumors for weeks now about a “whitey” tape with Michelle and Farakhan at the church, but Beckel didn’t say that’s what was dropping today. It could be nothing but a rumor started by Larry Sinclair according to the liberal blogs, or it could be the bomb that Beckel predicted as is touted on the conservative blogs. The surprise to me was that Beckel would perpetuate the rumor by giving it airtime, although he wouldn’t disclose the content. He’s a outspoken supporter of Obama, and it seemed odd he would even bring it up.
