Just coming over the wires now, Obama has put out a statement resigning his membership at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Obama has not denounced the church, he is merely withdrawing his name as a member of it.
The story from MyWay:
ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - Barack Obama has resigned his 20 year membership in the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago in the aftermath of inflammatory remarks by his longtime pastor the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and more recent fiery remarks at the church by another minister.
Obama campaign communications director Robert Gibbs said Obama had resigned from the church “over the last few days.”
Campaign aides said they weren’t immediately certain how the resignation took place, whether by letter or in some other fashion, and were trying to find out.
Messages left for a church spokeswoman in Chicago were not immediately returned Saturday afternoon.
The development came as Obama campaigned in South Dakota.
Obama said he disagreed with Wright but initially portrayed him as a family member he couldn’t disown. The preacher had officiated at Obama’s wedding and been his spiritual mentor for some 20 years.
More as it develops including video of his statement.
Update
Video of Obama making the statement:
Clearly he’s cutting ties before the perceived general election begins soon. This day was probably coming since the first Rev. Wright controversy.

“Now that I’m a candidate for president, every time something is said in church…the remarks will be imputed to me.”
Yeah I love how he quits his church now, 20 years in all his radical friends must be real upset with him. His wife is probably very angry, because I heard she took the things of Jeremiah Wright and other preachers to heart. Good job quiting the Church Barack H. Obama, it still does not change my opinion of you, you only quit because of politics, you probably still wish you could be sitting in those aisles.
Perhaps overdue, but he has little choice, IMO.
For once, I feel I have reason to be proud of Obama for something! (I mean no offense to Obama fans.
)
I think he had no choice as well. But the problem is he has lost some supporters now in the church for his rejection of them, and on the other hand he probably will not regain much support if any from those that rejected his candidacy based on this issue. This action, I think, can too late, but kudos to him for setting it up as he did with a supposed “leak” to CNN. It made it look as though the media had to pull it out of him, and I’m sure he’s hoping that will soften the blow to the 8000 church members.
This is simply ridiculous! I agree, he would have stayed in that church with their radical thoughts if he weren’t running for president, HELLO he stayed in it for TWENTY YEARS people!! Do you really think if he weren’t under the micorscope that he would all of sudden quit his church. This makes me wonder what other things he says and does just because he is now being watched.
I really do not like how Mr. Obama speaks to the public while addressing the tough issues. Didn’t someone say he was a good debater/speaker? ‘Uhh/Umm’ between every few words becomes a little irritating after a while.
Let me be clear that I am no english major or the perfect speaker, but a president should have these basic speaking skills. I am not an ‘Obama Hater’ either, actually, close to the oppposite. Mr. Obama has grown on me eventhough I am a registered Repulican. I just can not stand to hear him speak.
Just as a side note on the Trinity Church, it seems while holding such anti-American sentiments, they do not mind taking american taxpayer’s dollars.
“FOX News has learned that over the last 15 years, Trinity has received at least $15 million in grants from the federal government — in other words, taxpayer money.”
Obama’s campaign was quick to release a press statement that he had nothing to do as an Ill. senator in securing these grants for his church.
