Obama Courting Pro-Gun Voters, Somehow

Obama Courting Pro-Gun Voters, Somehow

Despite the recent statements on limiting concealed carry permits by basically restricting them, Obama is hoping to court some pro-gun voters in the upcoming Pennsylvania Primary.

Here’s the story from The Politico:

Barack Obama did not hunt or fish as a child. He lives in a big city. And as an Illinois state legislator and a U.S. senator, he consistently backed gun control legislation.

But he is nevertheless making a play for pro-gun voters in rural Pennsylvania.

By highlighting his background in constitutional law and downplaying his voting record, Obama is engaging in a quiet but targeted drive to win over an important constituency that on the surface might seem hostile to his views.

The need to craft a strategy aimed at pro-gun voters underscores the potency of the issue in Pennsylvania, which claims one of the nation’s highest per capita membership rates in the National Rifle Association.

It also could provide clues as to whether Obama, as one of the Senate’s more liberal members, can position himself as an acceptable choice to a conservative-minded demographic in later primary contests and in the general election.

It seems funny but I guess anything is possible. He’s certainly got to try considering he’s still down in Pennsylvania.

  2. You haven’t seen Tom Selleck endorse Obama, have you? *LOL* Of course not, he sits on the board of the NRA. Obama, NRA members are more educated than you think, sweetie, you can save your time and money, there is no fence in this world wide enough to ride on that one.

  3. So Obama goes to Montana to reassure voters there that he has consistently supported gun ownership, saying that he has “no intention of taking away folks’ guns.”

But the AP reported that in a 1996 questionnaire Obama said he “supported banning the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns.” (Read the questionnaire yourself: http://www.politico.com/s.....aire2.html )

Which one of Obama’s positions do you think the Republican nominee will tout in the fall?

  4. He’s not fooling the NRA for sure, Curtis. Here’s what they have to say on their website about Obama:

    “And then there’s Obama…

Like Hillary Clinton, presidential candidate Barack Obama is using the scripted rhetorical tricks in the Third Way playbook to the letter. And like Hillary, he is talking our talk while walking their walk.

Obama’s attempt to fool gun rights voters is designed for the politically less savvy and is intentionally opaque. Part of his syrupy rhetoric is an attack on NRA.

“The problem that we’ve had is that the overwhelming majority of gun owners . . . would be amenable to reasonable gun control laws,” Obama said. “The NRA’s attitude has been that any restriction is an infringement on the rights of gun owners . . . I think they are oftentimes able to scare law-abiding gun owners . . . ”

If anybody should scare gun owners it is Obama–the real Obama, not the scripted actor in the Third Way play.

The freshman Illinois U.S. Senator has embarked on a cynical divide-and-conquer strategy where he would have some firearms owners believe they would be out of harm’s way when it comes to his gun control schemes. In Iowa, a recent headline told it all–”Obama: My wife sees need for rural gun ownership.”
