Huckabee Supporters Behind “NoMittVP.com”?

A new site has been swirling around all day, it’s called No Mitt for VP, and is actively advocating against the possibility of Mitt Romney as McCain’s vice president.

The site contains this petition for supporters to sign:

Republican Presidential Nominee, Senator John McCain:

We call upon you to reject any consideration of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as a Vice Presidential running mate.

We further urge you to only consider for Vice President an individual with a strong and consistent record of support for both the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death, and the amendment of the U.S. Constitution to establish marriage as only between one man and one woman.

A release on it from Christian Newswire:

WASHINGTON, April 4 /Christian Newswire/ — More than 20 leading social conservatives signed an open letter to Senator John McCain expressing their displeasure over the prospect of an “M&M” ticket being pushed by Karl Rove, Sean Hannity and others in the economic wing of the Republican Party.

Among the signers are those, such as Paul Weyrich of the Free Congress Foundation, who once supported Mitt Romney and now publicly regret it.

“If Governor Romney is on your ticket, many social conservative voters will consider their values repudiated by the Republican Party and will either stay away from the polls this November or only vote down ticket. For the sake of your election, the health of your party, and the future of America you must not allow the obvious electoral consequences of that to occur,” concludes the text of the ad addressed to Senator McCain.

The warning from grass roots conservatives is clear; with Mitt Romney on the ticket there could very well be enough social conservatives staying at home to allow a Barack Obama victory in the fall.

The full page advertisement will begin running in cities in which Senator McCain is campaigning, beginning Saturday April 5, 2008 in Prescott, Arizona. Readers are given an opportunity to express their opinions of Mitt Romney as the vice presidential choice of Senator McCain at www.NoMittVP.com.

Some questions, well not really questions, but it has come to light that many of the backers involved in this site and petition against Romney are all Huckabee supporters. Apparently they want McCain to consider Huckabee over a Romney VP slot.

Perhaps we are seeing the new divide emerge on the GOP side should McCain pick someone other than an acceptable social conservative. However, I’m wondering if McCain will ever be able to genuinely placate conservatives, regardless of who he picks as VP.

  1. Wow, if you go to that site and check out the signatures, looks like as many are saying pick Romney as are saying not to, and some are even anti-McCain! I don’t think they’ll get very far with their petition this way. *L*

  2. I support Gov Romney for VP. I feel that my vote is just as important as anyone who signed the cheap shot. Its obvious that they are promoting the Huckster, from Arkansas.
Sen McCain please pick Gov Romney for your VP. Thanks.

  3. Seeing the evangelicals and trinitarians slam Mitt for his faith caused me to re-evaluate my position not only on politics but on my faith and I can tell you that I am not the only one that has converted to the Mormon faith. Is this what they are afraid of if Mitt gets the VP slot? They sure aren’t winning any votes and surely are losing church members by their outright hatred and non-Christian values to demoralize Mitt Romney just because of his faith, which is now my faith.

I know there are a lot of non-Mormons that voted for Mitt and most of my family members who didn’t convert. I can’t tell you how many people that I know that thought they were Evangelicals or Christian Conservatives questioning the people they follow what they are hearing at their churches across this fine country. You are supposed to go to church to learn how to more like Jesus and to grow in your faith, not be told how horrible Mormons are and whom to vote for.

The truth will come out and you are seeing that you don’t attract people to follow the evangelical faith spewing words of venom and hatred.

One would think these folks would vote for Obama over Mitt, because somehow his faith is more palatable. Obama who turns his back to the flag, put his hand on the Koran to get sworn it, who attends a church where they take the Lord’s name in vain.

I saw the light and the truth of the hateful people that call themselves Christ like and I converted to a faith where people truly walk the walk.

There are just as many people that won’t go and vote for McCain if Huckabee is on the ticket. We just will stay home silently and not start hateful NON CHRISTIAN website. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME………….

  4. If this groups efforts truly had the Party/Country’s efforts at heart they would simply call Senator McCain and tell them what they think.

No it is not principle that drives this group, but the fact that Mormons are converting much of their flock.

McCain does not support a marriage ammendment. Was their comment meant to weaken the party nominee? I’m sure we’ll soon be hearing that Romney was really behind this Ad. He wanted to seem a victim right?

McCain would WANT someone who AGREES with his position (if the ads allegations are correct- that there should not be a marriage amendment) but who also has the conservatives pundents rooting for him.

If they wanted to discourage McCain wouldn’t they have emphasised - hey this Guy’s position on the Marriage Amendment is Vastlydifferent from your own.

  5. Not that any of us knows for sure it’s a Huckabee ploy, but based on what Huckabee underhandedly did in SC, denying his involvement in the push-polling lies about Fred Thompson, it sounds just like the kind of thing Huck would do. Maybe Huck’s old campaign people used the same trick again, instead of Huck.

Will you please show us some verifiable proof that Obama swore in with his hand on the Quran. I mean do you see the error in this propaganda you are spreading? He belongs to a church that takes the Lords name in vain but he also swore in with his hand on the Quran.
Also give me the quote where his church used the lords name in vain.

And since you are a Mormon do you care to Fill us in on the early Mormon faith not allowing black people in to their faith? Why did they change their mind later? what was in the Mormon doctrine which banned black people from joining.

  7. A good portion of Huckabee supporters are anti-Mormons bigots. Romney would have fared better if he was jewish.

If given the choice I would much rather have your typical Mormon as a neighbor than your run of the mill evangelical. They’re a hell of a lot nicer group of people to be around.

  8. Dreadsen,

The LDS Church never forbade black people from joining their Church, they were only not allowed to have the priesthood until 1978. I don’t know the entire reason, but I think it has something to do with the persecution Mormons have faced in the past partially because they were treating slaves as humans, not animals. The time they got the priesthood was not long after many Churches STOPPED segregating their congregations. Does anyone talk about that???

  9. I don’t know where all this anti-mormon sentiment is coming from. All of America’s most prominent presidents from George Washington to Abraham Lincoln were Mormons (not in life, but my understanding is that all our presidents have been kindly baptized by the church postmortem). Seems like American history and the Mormon faith are pretty heavily intertwined.

  10. Fred here’s why

In February, 1848, Brigham Young preached, for the first time, that Negroes were “the children of Cain” and “cursed”. By “cursed” he meant:

    1. They were Canaanites and were to be servants of the descendants of Shem and Japheth (Whites and Semites) until the curse was removed by the LORD.

    2. They were banned from the Mormon priesthood and Mormon temples until the curse was removed by the LORD.

    3. They were the children of Cain, and Cain was the first Negro; the black skin was the “mark” of Cain.

From 1848 until 1978 (130 years) black Mormons could not partake of the Higher Ordinances of Mormon Temples (Endowments and Sealings) nor could black Mormon men be ordained to any office in the priesthood (there were only two exceptions to this rule, the son and grandson of Elijah Abel); which every single Mormon male is supposed to hold after the age of 12.

Negroes (black people of African descent) could always become “Mormons”. They could always be baptized into the Church, and attend Church meetings, but, from 1848 to 1978, they were “banned” from Mormon Temples and from the Priesthood; which every Mormon male over the age of 12 is supposed to hold.

Mormons believe that they may become Gods and Goddesses in the Afterlife, but ONLY if they hold the Priesthood (if males), and only IF they are “sealed” in a Mormon Temple by a Mormon high priest called a “Sealer”. Otherwise, they will become “servants” in Heaven; serving Gods and Goddesses but not becoming either.

To “ban” Negroes from the Priesthood and Temples meant to prohibit them from the opportunity to become Gods and Goddesses in the afterlife, and from the hope of becoming gods and goddesses. Mormons believe that all Gods are married to Goddesses, and only faithful Mormons “endowed” and “sealed” in a Mormon Temple may become a God or Goddess in the Afterlife.

This is called the “Curse of Cain” Legacy. Do you see how this doctrine and teaching can be used to support racism against blacks?

  11. Hmmm… I personally have never and will never vote for a candidate based on relgion. I have always stuck by the basic rights listed in our constitutiion, and “freedom of religion” is one of them.

You can argue all day about the gritty details, but the bottom line is each relgion has their own drawbacks and positives.

I would much rather look into voting records and candidate websites to find out what the candidate will bring to the table. Honestly I think people voting based on religion and morals is what got us into this Bush tragedy to begin with (look at the polls of what people cared most about in 2000, you’ll see what I mean).

So what is the Mormon faith used to be discriminatory? I’m not a Mormon, and don’t care to be one, but that doesn’t mean I think all Mormons are racist. ANYBODY can be racist, and it’s no fair to lump that into the Mormon image even if there is a historic basis for it.

So what if Obama attends a church where the pastor on one viedotaped sermon used God’s name in vain? I do that on occasion too, and I don’t think that is enough to throw all the good things I do and say out the window, just as it desn’t dispell 30 years of faith and good teachings that Wright has brought to Obama’s church.

Regardlss of all this talk, Romney is prolly McCain’s best bet for a VP. He’s the most liked other than Huckabee and Ron Paul, and it will deifintely attract Reps who don’t really like McCain.

  12. Oh Ho, I see what’s going on here. Fear of the Mormon faith. When people begin to investigate the Mormon religion they tend to become converts. Keep it up Anti-Mitt group, you’re only helping the opposition. Besides, it isn’t very becoming of you.

  13. I never thought I’d vote for McCain, however I would happily vote for a McCain / Romney ticket.

As for Huckabutt… No way! The guy had ethics problems in Arkansas and I don’t trust him. He would be a better fit for Clinton…

I don’t like how the shuckster wore his religion on his sleeves and tried to use it to gain votes. Particularly in light of his ethics problems… I’m surprised any of the “Religeous Right” would vote for someone so corrupt

  15. Huckster committed political career suicide by hanging around like a lost puppy. Now he wants to make sure that Romney doesn’t get what he so badly wanted. I’ve heard a couple of people say how obvious it is that Romney wants to be VP. I think he’s maintained his dignity throughout this whole thing. So what if he does want to be the VP. Everyone has a job they would like to get. If you’re qualified for a job, go get it. Just because no one wants the Huck on their ticket doesn’t mean he and his bigoted cronies need to wage a campaign to make sure Romney doesn’t get it. Once again, Huck and his followers showing how much class they don’t have.

  16. I think maybe this small group of Huckabee’s supporters are acting a bit like democrats, in that they seem to want to emulate the constant mudslinging going on over there about race and gender. They just want to make it about religon.

I agree with you, Michelle. I don’t vote for a candidate based on religon, and I’m not sure religon should even enter into a political debate. I think the government has made itself clear - in taking religon out of the schools, and demanding the removal of the ten commandments on government property - that they won’t support a President based on anything to do with religon.

Please note I didn’t say I agreed with taking religous privileges out of the schools, I think it’s a direct violation of personal rights and free speech, and any elected official that supported it should be impeached. But then, I also believe English should be the first language of America, and both Obama and Clinton voted against that, too.

Indiminded, I don’t know how many Presidents have been Mormon, but I can name you all that have been Freemasons. I believe several have also been Quaker, to include Richard Nixon. Quakers have always believed that it was wrong for one human being to own another human being, thus they never owned slaves and included blacks into their congregations.

  17. I was a Hucakbee supporter, and was not behind this ad, but now that I have seen it, I can say I totally agree with the facts presented, and hope McCain pays some attention.

It seems the Romney supporters always go into the Mormon thing, like all Huckabee supporters have to do is sit around and hate Mormons. That thinking is absurd. I never think about Mormons at all, unless they happen to appear at my doorstep, trying to convert me, and then I politely tell them that I believe they are in a cult.

Mike Huckabee did not make his political record hating Mormons, he made his mark governing with great grace and wisdom. Get off the religion thing.

After i asked he or she to verify this false claim of Obama swearing in with his hand on the Koran he has not responded.

If you get in the mud you can’t get upset if someone gets in the mud with you.

  19. Senator McCain is wrong in considering Gov Mitt Rommey as Vice President. He does not support the conserative values I have. And I think that another person is more ideal then him. I will not be able to vote for that kin of ticket.
