Clintons Release Tax Returns, $109 Million 7 Years - Updated

Hillary Clinton has finally officially released her tax return as promised back in February. The crux of the story is their $109 million dollar income over the past 7 years. Of course, many will ask similar questions of Hillary as they did of John Edwards which is how they can connect to the poor and downtrodden when making such a substantial income. Still, no surprise here as both Clintons have had lucrative book deals and Bill still makes a handsome sum for speaking engagements.

Here’s the report from Yahoo! News:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Clinton report nearly $109.2 million in income for seven years in newly released tax data.

The Democratic presidential candidate and her husband paid $33.8 million in taxes from 2000 through 2007. They listed $10.25 million in charitable contributions during that period.

Clinton has been under pressure to release her tax returns, especially from rival Barack Obama, who posted his 2000 to 2006 returns on his campaign Web site last week. Neither Obama nor Republican Sen. John McCain have made their 2007 tax returns public, though both say they will this month.

To the Clinton’s credit, they did give away about 10% of their income to charity which is higher than Obama who topped out around 6%.

  1. Too bad she didn’t release any returns from 2007.

  2. According to Fox News, she did - 2000 - 2007. They noted that Obama has yet to release his 2007, but says he will do so in a month or so.

  6. Curtis, you’re right, and from the actual forms I cruised through and the breakdowns from experts I’ve read, I noted that some of that difference is that Clinton donates much of her book royalties to charity (McCain donates all of his book royalties to charity), and Obama pockets his royalties. Also, out of Obama’s 2%, the majority of that in 2006 went to his church - more than $60,000, I believe it was to Trinity Church. His other donations were nominal and largely african american related charities.

$33 million to the IRS is a chunk, too. And what it says to me is that anyone that pays that much money to the government should really be concerned about how it’s being spent.

According to the figures, 82.8 million of their income was her husband’s income for book royalties, speeches, and presidential pension. That leaves 26.2 million attributed to Hillary’s income over 8 years. Both made large sums from books — 10.5 million dollars for Senator Clinton, mainly from her autobiography “Living History;” and 29.5 million dollars for the former president’s two books, including 23 million for the best-selling memoir “My Life.”

I just don’t think we can fault a candidate for having the ability to make money, nor a talent for writing and selling books. That’s the American Dream after all, isn’t it?
It’s the same thing Obama has attempted to do with the release and re-releases of his books, no? Apparently, they just haven’t sold as well as either of the Clintons - not according to his tax returns. Of course, we haven’t seen his tax returns for 2007 yet, as we now have seen for Clinton (both of them). Maybe his book sales went up in 2007.
