Video: Bush endorses McCain

Bush endorses McCain

In what may be the most used footage by the Democrats in ads run against McCain, President Bush endorsed him today at the White House. In an effort to perhaps unite the party, the two stood together today and McCain actually invited Bush to come campaign for/with him.

Here’s video of the endorsement from ABC News:

And the report on it from Reuters:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush formally endorsed Republican John McCain for president on Wednesday, calling him a man of character who is “not going to change” when it comes to taking on Islamic extremists.

“He’s going to be the president who will bring determination to defeat an enemy and a heart big enough to love those who hurt,” Bush said in a Rose Garden ceremony at which McCain sometimes had trouble getting a word in edgewise.

Bush gave McCain — whom Bush defeated in a bitter 2000 battle for the Republican presidential nomination — the red-carpet treatment at the White House. He welcomed him at an entrance normally reserved for heads of state and treated him to a West Wing lunch.

The endorsement will likely help McCain rally disenchanted conservatives behind his candidacy, and with Bush helping him raise much-needed campaign cash, it will give him a significant boost headed into the campaign for the November election.

See, I don’t think it helps McCain with conservatives all that much. Many of them have some disgust with Bush over moderate positions he’s taken on immigration and spending. McCain being endorsed by Bush is really a formality it seems since he’s currently the highest sitting Republican in office.

As I’ve been saying, endorsements can’t erase the legislation and positions McCain has been associated with that really have driven conservatives nuts over the past several years.

  1. I think it’ll be great for the Dems if Bush does some campaigning with McCain, I can’t see McCain benefitting in the slightest, very much the opposite in fact. With Bushs’ approval rating as it is, he’d be a liability to McCain.

If done correctly, McCain can benefit from Bush. There are still 30% or so of the country that approves of Bush, so somewhere around 60% of conservatives approve of him. McCain got the endorsement, Bush will raise money, but you won’t see them traveling the country together.

  3. On a lighter note, I caught the video of Pres. Bush doing a little jig waiting for Sen. McCain to come out to the press conference. Looked to me like Bush is in a much better mood these days, I think he may be looking forward to getting back into private life.
