Update @ 7pm ET

Fox News and CNN are projecting Barack Obama the winner.

Update @ 7:14pm ET

Results are finally beginning to trickle in but Obama’s poised to take an easy victory, maybe 10-15 points ahead of Clinton. I’ll keep this updated periodically but Obama is definitely the winner in South Carolina, as we all predicted he would be.

To me, this clearly has setup a deep racial divide in the Democratic Party. A party that is supposed to be colorblind on candidates yet this become a major issue and was clearly the tipping point in South Carolina.

  1. I wish I had the racial statistics in front of me. The media has played up a division in White and Black votes in South Carolina– but if Obama can capture enough votes, this would probably dispel such a myth.

If he doesn’t, the Clintons could use this to their advantage to garner more Latino/Hispanic and White votes for Super Tuesday.

  2. Funny you should ask Michael:

    CNN Exit Polls:

    Race:

    African-American – 80% Obama, 18% Clinton

    White – 38% Clinton, 38% Edwards, 24% Obama

  3. A 14% differential between Clinton and Obama, in my opinion, does not constitute much for the upcoming elections. Edwards and Obama have been getting a lot of the same voters not based on race, but on ideological lines. If Edwards was not in the race, I do not think his 38% would have gone to Clinton.

Certainly race is a big factor in South Carolina, but the dynamics of race are very different in the South, than say other regions of the country. Racism is everywhere, but it manifests in different ways.

Winning Iowa, nearly winning New Hampshire, and capturing 1/4 of the South Carolina white vote infers– for me– that Obama has wide appeal across race lines.

  4. I agree. If Obama ends up winning by 20+ points, his percentage of the white vote shouldn’t matter. This will be a huge win.

  5. He should have appeal across race lines; he’s mixed race with a mom who’s white and a dad who was black; he represents us all.

  6. Did African American voters in South Carolina vote along race?

  7. So you’re implying that Democrats are racial hypocrites because a good number of black people seem to want a black president? Even though the white Democrats clearly are not voting along racial lines? Are we going to fault businessmen for voting for Romney, veterans for voting for McCain? Come on.
