McCain, Romney Battle Over Michigan
The two have all but written off South Carolina for now as they focus on winning Michigan. For Romney it’s personal as his family was big there. For McCain, he’s got a chance there and a win could certainly help him heading into South Carolina.
Here’s a video report on Romney’s efforts:
While it may not be do-or-die for Romney in Michigan, it sure would be disappointing to lose yet another state and specifically, a state where has good name recognition. He’s got the money to easily stick it out until Super Tuesday which I’m sure he will be doing even if he loses Michigan.
Michigan is chock full of independents similar to New Hampshire which seems to favor McCain. Right now McCain is leading on average and I’d honestly have to give him an edge in Michigan. He’s got some momentum coming from New Hampshire, something Romney hasn’t captured yet with two 2nd place finishes so far.
Update
As a commenter pointed out, Romney did indeed win Wyoming which I overlooked. Still, I don’t think that’s going to do much for him since it was not widely publicized and has been largely ignored. He did win there but that’s not going to weigh on the minds of Michigan or South Carolina voters.

yes, McCain has momentum, but you are incorrect in saying that Romney has only two second place finishes so far. He won Wyoming; it’s just no one wants to publicize that fact.
You’re correct, I reported on the Wyoming results but overlooked it here. I’ve corrected that. Still though, I don’t think that will make much difference for him.
It apparently did not mean much to Romney either. During the last debate, Ron Paul stated that there had been only 2 primaries thus far, so the election was far from over. This was a ripe opportunity for Romney to interject and correct him, but he did not.
What about Huckabee? Granted he is vying for South Carolina more than Michigan but recent polls show him very close with McCain (Almost within the margin of error). He could very well finish second if he manages to take enough of the conservative vote from Romney or the anti illegal immigration vote against McCain. Depending on the number of Independents voting in the Republican primary we could very well see another upset drastically different from the poll numbers. Especially if independent voters primary with the democrats in an effort to regain the momentum for Obama against Hillary.
Anthony, you are correct in that Huckabee is seriously competing in Michigan as well. Although he’s looking right now at a 3rd place finish according to the polls, which we can’t always trust. RCP has him about 9 points behind both McCain and Romney in 3rd place. It’s possible he could do better there but right now I’m not seeing it yet.
I hope a win for romney doesn’t hurt mccain i hate romney
