January Debates Finally Excluding Low-Tier Candidates
Ron Paul supporters are screaming bloody murder but, for the life of me, I cannot fathom why.
Anyways, here’s the story from CNN:
NEW YORK (AP) — ABC and Fox News Channel are narrowing the field of presidential candidates invited to debates this weekend just before the New Hampshire primary, in Fox’s case infuriating supporters of Republican Rep. Ron Paul.
The roster of participants for ABC’s back-to-back, prime-time Republican and Democratic debates Saturday in New Hampshire will be determined after results of Thursday’s Iowa caucus become clear.
Fox, meanwhile, has invited five GOP candidates to a forum with Chris Wallace scheduled for its mobile studio in New Hampshire on Sunday. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee received invites, leaving Paul of Texas and Rep. Duncan Hunter of California on the sidelines.
The network said it had limited space in its studio — a souped-up bus — and that it invited candidates who had received double-digit support in recent polls.
In Ron Paul’s defense, he is leading Thompson in New Hampshire according to the RCP average. According to the average, Ron Paul is at 6.3% and Fred Thompson is at an almost meaningless 3%. Therefore, based on New Hampshire polls, Ron Paul should be included in the debate and Thompson should be out.
However, clearly they’re basing this on national polls as well where Thompson is well ahead of Paul, tied somewhere for 3rd or 4th place, more than double Paul’s support.
I do know one thing, the line has to be drawn somewhere. Reality tells us that the candidates polling under 10% really do not have a meaningful chance of winning. Despite the claims by Paul supporters, and believe me, I’d love to be surprised because it’d make a heck of story, I don’t think he’s going anywhere nor will he come close to actually winning New Hampshire.
Furthermore, Duncan Hunter is being excluded as well, it’s just the natural order of things.

Ron Paul raises more money $20,000,000 for the quarter, more than any other GOP candidate. He wins virtually every straw poll offline and online (http://www.ronpaul2008.com/straw-poll-results/). You can’t drive anywhere without seeing Ron Paul signs everywhere .He’s the most searched terms on GOOGLE & TECHNORATI …. and you can’t fathom why? I suggest you get off the meds …
chris, you would be correct if the invitations to the debates were based on any of the things you mentioned, but they’re not. Furthermore, online straw polls are completely unscientific and entirely meaningless. Ron Paul supporters have managed to control the non-scientific polls but that does not translate into meaningful widespread support.
I know, you’ll tell me that Paul supporters are mostly college age and only have cell phones so that’s why their support isn’t reflected into the scientific polls or some other reason.
Furthermore, if he is so popular as you mentioned, then he doesn’t need the debate anyways, he’s clearly got enough exposure, doesn’t he? Not many candidates have a blimp flying around.
they should base their descision and invitation on the outcome of the iowa-debate and not because of polls…
Perhaps Nate is correct in his assumption on Paul…History certainly supports his conclusions. History is meant to be altered though, thats why they call it history. I don’t think Paul will win Iowa or NH but I DO think he will place higher than most think, most young internet supporters who support Paul are not being polled so the numbers are not a true reflection of what actually may occur. Should be fun.

When Ron Paul wins a FOX poll they say it’s because of spammers, even if it’s impossible to vote 2 twice. On Sean and Hannity, they even said that these poll are just a lot of fun, nothing serious about it when Ron Paul won at 30%. Ron Paul broke a funding record and it was from small contributor instead of big corporations, he even broke his own record one month later 6 000 000$ in 24 hour. He got the most donations from soldiers and millitary staff. He’s got supporter everywhere from every background and they say he’s not a serious candidate!!!! I says if Ron Paul is not at the debate, a mob of Ron Paul supporters should brake in to disturbed the whole curupted debate and show that he’s got support.
After tonight I would say they need to recondiser since RON PAUL destroyed RUDY…..
By the way if you do not like tonights results… WELL VOTE!!!!

Do we elect individuals to political offices in this nation based on biased media polls?…the answer is no. Do we let media decide who gets elected? Some of us do….but the true American freedom answer is no. Why then is Fox and the boys choosing who participates in debates based on polls and not actual votes? Ron Paul finished in Iowa above Rudy Giuliani….therefore, he should have been invited before Rudolph the red nosed mayor. It’s time Americans get their voice back from big media. By the way, how is it that Mitt Romney has been allowed to buy ClearChannel Radio in an election year? Isn’t this conflict of interest? Look it up and think for yourself. People…be individuals…think for yourselves instead of taking every thought straight from your television. We’re turning into a controlled society. Where’s the freedom in that?
