Report on the Univision Democratic debate

From NBC6:

MIAMI — For the first time in a U.S. presidential campaign, candidates vying for the Democratic nomination will take part in a debate Sunday that will be broadcast across the U.S. in Spanish.

The event, held at the University of Miami and broadcast by the Univision Network, marks the Democratic candidates’ recognition of the growing political muscle that the country’s more than 44 million Hispanics could wield in the 2008 election.

Seven of the eight Democratic candidates will be taking part in the debate — including front-runners Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards. Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, fresh off a trip to Iraq, will not be participating in the debate.

Yeah yeah, ¡Voto para mí!

However, this is hilarious:

Univision invited the Republican candidates for a similar forum, but only Sen. John McCain of Arizona accepted.

That’s the funniest thing I’ve ever read.

More from the AP:

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton insisted Sunday night it’s time to start pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq as she and her Democratic presidential rivals debated the war on the eve of a much-awaited assessment by U.S. commanding Gen. David Petraeus.

“I’d bring them all home within six to eight months,” the New Mexico governor said in the debate, which took place in south Florida and was broadcast on Univision, the nation’s largest Spanish-language network. “There is a basic difference between all of us here … This is a fundamental issue,” he said.

All who were asked about immigration at the debate on the campus of the University of Miami said they would address this vexing issue in their first year in office.

Clinton criticized the immigration bill proposed in the last Congress, dominated by Republicans. That legislation would have penalized those who help illegal immigrants. “I said it would have criminalized the good Samaritan. It would have criminalized Jesus Christ,” she said.

The crappy amnesty immigration bill would have criminalized Jesus Christ? What the heck is she talking about? So under the Kennedy amnesty bill, Jesus Christ would now be illegal? I haven’t specifically checked, but I think that might be somewhat of a stretch.

Anyone who can track down the video, leave a comment here with the location since I totally missed recording this one.

  2. Yeah, I think they should take the top 4 from each side and let them debate. That would actually make them watchable.
